thanks. excellent. the dell premier support folks didn't have answer to this and said i'd have to just reinstall windows after making the switch. note that if you have bitlocker enabled you can execute 'manage-bde -protectors -disable C: & manage-bde -status' before reboot for bios storage setting change and into safe mode to avoid having to enter bitlocker recovery key.

I installed ubuntu in dual boot and had to switch to AHCI - only one OS was working depending on whether I used AHCI or RAID. This fixed all my problems. :)
