Zircon StudSensor HD70 quickly and easily locates the center, edges, and direction of wood and metal studs and joists behind walls, floors, and ceilings up to 1 1/2 inches deep. The HD70 debuts a new Target Spotlight that illuminates on-screen when you’ve found the center of a stud and a low battery indicator for optimal performance. Select from two stud scan modes to find the center of wood and metal studs to securely anchor mirrors, shelves, and cabinets to the wall. WireWarning® detection indicates the presence of live AC voltage. The new translucent red base, illuminated "V" marker groove, and SpotLite® Pointer makes for more accurate marking of stud center location.

* Not recommended for lath & plaster walls *

Caution: Do not rely exclusively on scanners to locate objects behind a scanned surface. Some objects may not be detectable by your scanner. Use additional information sources such as visible points of entry of pipes and wiring into walls, standard 16” and 24” (41 – 61 cm) stud spacing practices, and construction plans to determine the likely location of hidden objects. Always use caution before drilling or cutting.

WARNING: ALWAYS TURN OFF THE ELECTRIC, GAS, AND WATER SUPPLIES BEFORE PENETRATING A SURFACE. NEVER ASSUME THERE ARE NO LIVE ELECTRICAL WIRES IN A WALL. FAILURE TO FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS MAY RESULT IN ELECTRIC SHOCK, FIRE, SERIOUS INJURY, AND/OR PROPERTY DAMAGE.

Not sure if I have a lemon. But this gives inconsistent scan (both mode) I almost cut through some electrical wires due to this failure.

This situation is extremely frustrating, and it is to be the simplest solution. The battery icon consistently displays one bar, prompting me to purchase a replacement on Amazon, to encounter the same issue again. Ignoring the icon, I proceed to inspect the wall, which starts emitting a sound and turns red from the left side to the right side, as if there were a million coins hidden behind the wall or the largest stud I have ever seen.

I bought one of these today. When I find the stud, an keep moving it, it still says center and I'm 2 feet away from where it started. So I have like 6-10 edges and 6-10 centers for one Is it broke?

Two Questions about the HD70:

1) In the documentation provided with the tool in the 'Wire Waring Detection' section it states that "if scanning *begins* over a LIVE AC wire, the indicator will flash continuously."

*OK, so this is what I did:* I scanned my wall and stopped directly above the light switch. Obviously as I approached the light switch and stopped over it, the Live Wire icon illuminated. Which is great. All good up to here. BUT then when I depressed the side button and pressed it again, calibration performed, with the tool still directly over the light switch, the wire-warning indicator should be flashing. Afterall, I am STARTING a scan over a hot wire.

Remember, as stated in the documentation, when starting a scan over a hot wire, the icon should flash. Mine does not. Any explanation?

2) Low Battery Indicator: does the battery icon that is located in the middle of the screen only have 1 bar illuminated? Because when I saw only 1 bar remaining on the battery icon, I took it to mean my 9V battery was low. Even though the batter was just bought the same day and still sealed in original packaging. I have a Voltmeter but it is at work and won't return to work until next week and work is across the city or else I would have checked the battery voltage with my meter. So I just bought another 9V battery (different store, different battery manufacturer). Installed the new battery and again, only 1 bar illuminates.

To me, only 1 bar illuminated on a battery indicator means that the Voltage is low.

Now, I do see in the Troubleshooting Section that a low battery level will cause the indicator to flash and then not operate, but I figured with only 1 bar illuminated I wouldn't be that far off from that happening. Again, I assume 1 bar illuminated to mean a low battery level.

So then figured that maybe the screen has a burnt out LED to show the rest of the bars. Afterall, when you press the button to do a calibration check and Bulb Check is performed, all icons illuminate except the battery. To me a full battery icon, with a fully charged icon should be blacked out. Not just have 1 bar illuminated.

Can I get a clarification on the battery level indicator?

I’m not having much luck with my HD70, it keeps coming on and off intermittently.

What's the difference between the L70 and the HD70?

I purchased 4-5 Zircon stud finders over many years. This time it was HD70 but EVERY time it's 90% frustration. Inconsistency is the Zircon motto. Never is it easy or straightforward. Stoopid stud finders. You're better off removing a 1# strip of sheetrock across the top!

Getting totally inconsistent reads shrug 🤷🏻‍♂️

Wow, you people really figured out a way to cover yourselves. The directions say "DO NOT ASSUME EVERYTHING DETECTED IS A STUD." You should have added "DO NOT ASSUME THAT THE UNIT WILL FIND EVERY STUD." In another words, it doesn't do what it's supposed to do. Mine if finding studs where this is none and not finding one where I know there is one. So, what good is this? I'm returning it. No more Zircon products for me.

I haven’t found a stud finder that actually works the way the manufacturer claims. Far as I’m concerned they are toys for kids like plastic lawn mowers or bubble poppers. this my second zircon and the second on that is completely unreliable and pretty much useless
