"History doesn't repeat itself, but it rhymes." Man that hits the spot. So poetic. 💯💯

I was always a lot more interested in WW2 over WW1 but recently as you have been posting more about WW1 I’ve been really getting into it, keep posting great content👍🏻

Thank you so much for doing this series on WWI. I’m one of those who knows very little about The Great War and why it was fought. I’m so looking forward to seeing all the content from your trip to Europe!

The Iron Cross, especially second class, was given out by the millions through the world wars. First class was a lot more special, in ww1 there were around 200.000 I believe. The Pour Le Merite was a whole other dimension, it was only given out around 5000 times throughout its existence (which ended in 1918) and around 600 times in ww1. Interestingly, it was not only given to Germans, but among the people who had one were pretty much all royal heads of Europe.

I love how you contribute your own knowledge of the topic to further explain it. There are so many reactions out there that are completely clueless and some even, in disbelief mind you, say stuff like "those numbers must be exaggerated". I firmly belief that everyone should know how destructive both "great" wars were.

On a sidenote I think this was the first time I heard someone saying that germany had a chance to win the war at any given point. Most tend to say that even if the Schliefenplan worked, it would not have been possible because XYZ. Sometimes I wonder how the world would look if event X or Y went the other way. Better or worse we will never know. It might have been enough or it might have been futile either way.

The biggest irony to this war was that the single reason russia was forced to defend serbia was that russia could not allow austria-hungary to annex serbia. Meanwhile austria promised decided that they would NOT annex serbia not even parts of it, but failed to communicate it. One of many small details that could have prevented this tragedy. Would there still be WW1? Sure but it would have come later, maybe the world would have calmed down a bit. History should have tought us one big lesson: Peace is only the preparation time for the next war. And by god I hope that the next large war won't happen in our livetimes. As fascinating and interessting as it is, I hope nobody has to live through the hell that is a full out war.

Anyway great reaction, great input from your side, keep it up and stay healthy.

Greetings from Germany

I recently had the pleasure of standing in the very spot in Sarajevo by the Latin Bridge where Franz Ferdinand was shot. It was a surreal experience to think how much Europe and the world was influenced by that moment over a century ago.

I still find The Christmas Truce 1914 a fantastic story during The Great War. Humanity was embroiled in comfit that some people didn't want to fight.

The Armchair Historian has a really good video about World War 1 from the Austro-Hungarian perspective. I think the biggest problem for Austria-Hungary early in the war was that Serbia held out for as long as it did. That, combined Russia harassing them from the east, really put them in a position where they would collapse without German support. That’s just my view though. I could be totally wrong.

Dan Carlin's series on WW1 is some of the best 'popular history' you'll find anywhere. Not suggesting it for this channel to react obviously, its like a 15+hour series, but I suggest everyone give it a listen. I believe the series is called Blueprint for Armageddon but it does a great job of sketching the events but humanizing people and making you feel for the soldiers and civilians more than any other history entertainment I've encountered.

I highly recommend you read "The German Way of War: From the Thirty Years War to the Third Reich" by Robert Citino. It shows how Frederick the Great laid out how to fight a winnable war
