The usual reason for being unable to sideload is that the cable with Kindles and many phones is that they are only charging cables, not data cables. You also have to watch out for that brief message that asks if you want to transfer data or just charge. (It defaults to just charging). To put docs onto my Kindle, I load the doc onto my Android Device, which has the Kindle app installed, press on the doc in my File folder, choose Send To then the Kindle App from the list of choices. I also choose to let my doc be stored in my Amazon Library

Calibre works with the new MTP Kindles on macOS as well, no need for additional drivers or software.

At least sideloading is still possible in some way.
In r/kindle, there are certain posts which say the new Kindle lineup is bad for sideloading ebooks and fonts (esp on Mac), since it uses MTP (not MSC) file transfer protocol.
Also, some issues with custom fonts disappearing or reverting back to Bookerly every time it's woken from sleep.
Can you please check by transferring a DRM free ebook like something from Gutenberg, convert it to AZW3 and transfer via Calibre and see if the covers and page numbers appear correctly and stick after connecting to Wi-Fi/sleep-wake?
Also, please transfer few custom fonts to the fonts folder and see if they stay even after you connect to Wi-Fi and sleep/wake.

The problem is with Mac. My MacBook Pro no longer can detect the Paperwhite 2024 due to a new kindle protocol. I had to manage my klippings file with a PC. In the kindle support site says as much.

I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong (new Kindle Paperwhite 12, arrived Dec 1, 2024); when connected to my PC, I can see the folder for the Kindle, open it, copy and paste .epub to the Root or the Documents folder and it shows (while looking at the folder on my PC)...but once I disconnect from the PC, I cannot find the book on my Kindle. What am I missing?

I started out sideloading with a regular C cable and my PC would not even recognize the Kindle 12. Used the supplied Kindle C cable and voila, no issues using Calibre.

I have not been able to do this on my Paperwhite 2021 using Calibre, but you are bypassing intermediary software. I just tried your method on my Scribe, & it did not work. I installed the latest version of Calibre, restarted my PC, & the program had disappeared! I clicked its Setup file & reinstalled. I was able to side load some non-Amazon books from my PC & see them on my Home screen!

That's not true. I've got the new Matcha kindle and trying to put different fonts on it and its not connecting to my ipad mini 6 or my samsung go book laptop. my black 2022 kindle does that and i can manage to put new fonts on it. i love the green matcha. be very annoying if i can't put fonts on it to make it different. amazons website doesn't help.
