what if instead of shorting a stock before the ex-dividend date, I short the stock either on the ex-dividend date. Will I still have to pay the dividend?

Thanks because I had the bright idea of shorting stocks just before the ex-div dt since I knew the put prices were going to be inflated and there was a likely chance the price dips

Awesome video!

Would you be able to show how a put option with that exact scenario would work using Robinhood along with what to look for in options contracts and how to profit properly?

Thanks again!

If you're borrowing the shares shouldn't starbucks pay you the dividend? Then you just pay tge original shareholder what you got paid. I don't get why it comes out of your profit.

So you're paying the dividend even though you didn't benefit from the dividend?

I thought I was a genius my plan was to buy the stock long and short the same amount of shares I own aka shorting against the box the day before the ex dividend date and closing on the ex dividend date to collect dividends risk free but you say it won't work I'll only owe back what I gained

Great explanation of shorting hypothetically Starbucks. Great information on how to avoid having to pay dividends! 😘

This dividend rule is horrible, and it totally fucked me over. Never buy dividends unless you have a very, very good reason. Puts are the way to go. Fucking bullshit.

but what if you just sell your shorts before the pay date

Great information! I'm still new with dividend date payouts. So if I buy shares after the dividend payment date, what is the cut off time for not getting hit with dividend payments with the next upcoming dividend payment date?

Do stocks generally go down after the ex-div date therefore creating a shorting opportunity?

This was great, I've been looking for "stock prices last month" for a while now, and I think this has helped. You ever tried - Fenason Zeyames Idea - (do a search on google ) ? Ive heard some decent things about it and my friend got excellent results with it.
