Am I qualified to make this video? No I am not. But are the people who manipulate our markets so that they can harm the economy for their own gain qualified to do that? ALSO NO!!!

NOTES AND CORRECTIONS:
1. Shorting (betting against the current valuation of a stock) CAN BE VERY GOOD. People who can make money on a stock going down are incentivized to find problems with a company, and we want people doing that. We want people to work hard to find out if a company is lying, or if their products are dangerous or faulty. Shorts are incentivized to find problems with businesses, which is why billionaire business owners hate them and are excitedly shouting that they should be illegal.

2. It's a simplification to say that the problem was specifically (and only) that people had promised to purchase more than 100% of GameStop's stock. This is a thing that happens, but in the case of GameStop, it was something like 300% of available shares (not counting shares that were locked up an unavailable for trade.) This isn't as much a binary switch as it is a ramp up to problem-town.

3. There were plenty of simplifications in this video. When I say "bet" I don't think that's wrong, but others do. When I say "this is not an investment" I don't think that's wrong, but others do. An investment is money spent to increase the ability of a business to do it's work. "Investing" in the stock market is a bit of fancy doublespeak. You are buying an asset in the hopes that it will increase, but that asset purchase is only very tentatively tied to the ability of a company (or anyone) to create new value.

It's moments like this that I'm reminded of "A Bug's Life":
"You let one ant stand up to us then they all might stand up. Those puny little ants outnumber us a hundred to one, and if they ever figure that out there goes our way of life! It's not about food, it's about keeping those ants in line."

The winter coat you're wearing really gives this video a sense of "I was literally about to leave the house and live my normal life, but I got so frustrated and had to turn back and make this video so abruptly that I didn't even take off my coat"

*Hedge fund people trying to sell their GameStop stocks back to the company

GameStop: "We'll give you $5 store credit or $2 cash."

What’s happening with the game stop is simultaneously “look, money isn’t real!” and “look, money!”

"Eventually people are gonna figure out how powerful they are. It'll be interesting to see what we do with that." --Basically sums up Hank's general discourse since AART came out. I really appreciate how you've hit that "You are Special" kind of message, but without the cynical "us vs them" victimhood narratives of conspiracy cults, and without the blind optimism of motivational speakers. More re-humanizing, please!

Wednesdays of 2021 so far:
- Storming of the Capitol
- Trump impeached for the second time
- Biden's inauguration
- GameStop saved by Reddit
Wednesday is the day of the week to be alive

"It'll be interesting to see what we do with that." Likely the theme of the coming decade, I'm guessing.

Key difference: Storming the Capitol is illegal, buying stock is not

This situation is a great illustration of the concept I've heard people scoff at for years, which is that economics is the study of human behaviour. My economics teacher from when I started studying it when I was about 14 liked to start teaching the course by covering the 'big questions' of the subject, like 'why is money worth what it is', which usually meant they talked for 15 minutes and we spent 45 minutes going 'but wait, does that mean...?' until we'd wrapped our tiny minds around it. I am going to be forever grateful to that teacher, because I can draw you a supply/demand graph, but I can also explain the pros and cons of a gold or silver standard, tell you why the stock market is basically astrology, and know why a national bank changes the base rate, exactly none of which was on the syllabus. Great teachers teach you the stuff that will be on the test but also answer every question you can come up with until you've figured out all the contextual stuff about why the stuff that's on the test happens the way it does.

Can you IMAGINE students reading a history book in the future about how the stock market revolution began as a Reddit meme... 🤣

Honestly, the whole GME thing has probably been one of the most globally unifying events of wholesomeness since Pokemon Go summer of 2016, and I don't say that lightly
