Rush has been my favorite band for 35+ years. I never found any reasons to dislike them, but lots of reasons to love them.

Rush were never cool, which is why they were so cool.

Hemispheres still stands up to this day as a staggeringly epic prog album.

The best part about being a hardcore Rush fan back in the Seventies was that we just didn’t give a f*ck about anyone else’s opinion. We knew we had the best band and the less people who got them (and us) the better.

My first Rush concert was the Presto tour at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto. That afternoon was the funeral for a friend who had died in a car accident and his parents gave me his ticket to the show. It is truly the one time that going to a concert was utterly cathartic.

There I was a freshman in college back in spring of ‘83, still hanging on to my Led Zeppelin and Beatles. A dude I hung out with was sitting at a party with guys from our dorm floor, kind of praying they didn’t flip over that Song Remains the Same LP. I asked what his problem was with Zep and he said, “These guys can’t hold a candle to Rush.” I knew a couple songs but was not a fan. A week later I was hanging out in Tom’s room and he threw on 2112 and turned out the lights. Loving both prog and metal I was blown away by what I heard. I remember it like it was yesterday as my life would be forever changed! I began collecting Rush albums one by one and not in order. Next was A Farewell to Kings (another masterpiece). Now I wasn’t just hooked, I became a worshipper. Next up was Fly By Night which I could only find on cassette. I had a walkman and I played it over and over, all weekend long. After about a year I had them all from Rush (‘74) to Signals. I saw them on the Grace Under Pressure tour and loved it! Then came Power Windows; I hated it! As time went on I distanced myself from the new, spacey animal but continued to hold the Terry Brown era band in the highest regard. I saw them 2 more times but never really enjoyed any of the later albums, keeping only Counterparts and Clockwork Angels. As for why people hate them, I agree with geeky and fan obsession. I remember the geeks at college loved them and almost nobody else did, and in order to continue to buy their albums after Grace Under Pressure, you really had to be obsessed!

Rush was unique; three musicians, all masters of their instruments, in the same band, with a drummer who wrote deep, thoughtful lyrics. They managed to mix time signatures while most people remained unaware and still managed to get the average Joe as a fan, not to mention every musician on the planet. Neil inspired millions of drummers, both actual and air, while Geedy and Alex are both idolized in their respective areas. No other three musicians in history have been able to produce the same full, rich, complex sound, they will never be duplicated...

Three of the greatest musicians and songwriters in rock history. And they have a great sense of humor. Especially Alex.

I remember the first time I heard Tom Sawyer. I was walking down the sidewalk in my neighborhood and one of the tough kids was sitting in the shade against the side of a townhouse listening to his boombox. Tom Sawyer was playing. It blew my mind. And then I heard 2112... even more mind blown. Been a huge fan ever since.

"Rolling Stone... a periodical that loved this band, by the way..." That's it right there. No other reasons necessary.

Back in high school, around 1979 or 1980 I took an elective class called “Fantasy Literature”. The list of books we read covered sci-fi and fantasy. Think Ray Bradbury, Arthur C. Clarke, Tolkien, etc. We were given a semester project, which was writing a short story inspired by some work and introducing it in class. One of the classmates’ project was sci-fi based and used 2112 as his inspiration. In fact, he played the suite from side one fully. 20 minutes long for the whole class. After the side was over he continued his story with: “I woke up screaming” with all seriousness and everyone just fell apart laughing, including the student narrator. It was so great. Anyway, not really anything to do with people who hate Rush, this just reminded me of the story.

The bloody screeching vocals. Although I must admit I love Permanent Waves and Moving Pictures. Plus their musicianship was on another level.
