Why I Will Never Buy Foreign Katana #Shorts

I often get questions about whether you should or shouldn’t buy katana
from non-Japanese sword websites. It’s hard to say because I will never be able to buy them. This is due to the strict laws in Japan regarding katana. The reason why anyone can own a katana in Japan, is because katana are defined as art and not a weapon.

And for a sword to be regarded as a katana in Japan, there are many strict conditions such as…

1. Made from Tamahagane steel
2. Fold forging and quenching are performed
3. Beautiful appearance, Hamon waves, and metalwork are recognized as works of art
4. Clearly shows the traditional characteristics of each swordsmith ryuha

Swords that don’t meet these conditions are considered a mere weapon in Japan, and you will be arrested if you own one.

In conclusion, only qualified swordsmiths who possess traditional sword-making techniques are capable of making legal katana. However, please note that any nationality can become a swordsmith in Japan, and just because it’s traditional, it doesn’t mean that they are making the best kind of swords.

Please speak to unsigned swords from Japanese artists available outside Japan. They're more affordable than signed and give the artist a way to support themselves while improving their art.

There is one in Germany that makes traditional Japaneese swords. They use normal steels most of the time but at request (and a big sum of money) they make it with japaneese steel, straight from japan. He learned in japan how to smith traditionaly.
