BIGGEST Boat Life MISTAKES | Want to Live On A Sailboat? DON'T DO THIS!
Featured: 'A Knot A Day' by Nic Compton

This week, we bring you a free video about what we personally believe are some of the biggest mistakes you can make when transitioning to the boat life. We figured we've learned so much about what can go wrong over the past four years, it'd be worth sharing it with others.
Doing some of these things won't get you into trouble or hurt you, but it may lead to a mighty pain in the neck ;) And some of these mistakes could definitely get you into some sort of trouble.

That was probably the most objective and helpful “before you buy” video I have seen in a good long while. Thank you very much. I hope this comment finds you both safe and in good health.

Great list! I keep in mind the words of Albert Camus: "The struggle itself towards the heights is enough to fill a man's heart. One must imagine Sisyphus happy." I enjoy fixing up my boat with the goal of an eventual ocean crossing, possibly a circumnavigation, and I find that the happiness from working towards this goal is itself satisfying. I hope to eventually get to my goals, but I find joy in what I am doing now as well.

My number one rule: always stay calm, never ever rush and always think first, then act safely. 99.9% of troubles start with a decision taken to quick.
My number two rule: always have a plan A and a plan B and as well the plan C and always talk them through together with your crew beforehand. Then follow your plan. This is specially important for all manouvering, be it going in a marina, anchouring or any sail changes or the like.

I had never sailed before when my ex and me bought our boat, he had been sailing all his life, luckily I loved it and was never even seasick! Hope all is well with you, hugs from Spain xxx

My wife and I are planning to retire to the cruising life. We have a good deal of costal cruising experience (during our younger years) through the Gulf/San Juan Islands off the coast of Washington/British Columbia, but all your points are well taken! Cruising the Gulf/San Juans taught us the importance of watching tide charts and island currents! We have begun our research, and thank you both for you honest presentation of the “bewares.”

This should be 'required watching' to anyone that is searching 'boat life/ living on a boat/getting started sailing/etc" It nails it 👍🏾

Maybe the biggest mistake of all: forgetting to enjoy yourself! :-)

You can learn how to sail in a day. Seamanship will take a life time.

I didn't realize some of this at first. Eventually you find out, that any one of these points can bring your adventure crashing down around you! That being said... It's still worth it. Even the best practices will never guarantee as much as the worst! Thanks for the great vid.

Bravo good film...we like to give some encouragement: Just start, you learn on the way! One rule: "Always respect nature!" Become part of nature and set sail when "mother earth' invites you. We started 21 years ago covered now 120'000 nautical miles and got 6 children on the way. We never owned a house or car and still living on the same boat, the TOPtoTOP Expedition-Sailboat Pachamama; she went through an "evelution from a baby to an adult". Hope to meet Kittiwake on the Ocean once? Good winds Dario&Sabine with Salina, Andri, Noé, Alegra, Mia, and Vital

My two cents worth,
Is never buy a boat from someone who has bought a bigger boat as they tend to strip whatever is good and sell the bones to a newby. Always buy from someone who is retiring or have bought a house, that way you get a full boat not half a boat.

Unfortunately I can only leave one thumbs up!! This is one of the most valuable Utubes for the new sailor I've ever seen. Thanks for your great and very perceptive observations.

Good coverage.
Many think of it as ALL Champagne & Sundowners, forgetting that the SEA does as it pleases eg. CALM/ROUGH, within minutes.

Excellent all around advice! Be prepared, and keep things as simple as possible, advice I have not followed as much as I should have. But, I’ve been sailing since the 1970s, and have had plenty of time to reflect on my many mistakes. Love of the ocean kept me afloat, and the opportunity to learn from life keeps me moving forward. Keep up the good work.
