Magna Carta 800th anniversary- When was the Magna Carta signed?
The Magna Carta, Latin for ‘The Great Charter’ was a document signed by King John back in 1215.
It came after massive disputes between the King’s main men, the Barons and Bishops over the King’s power and disputes with the Pope.
After negotiating with these Barons from England, France and Scotland, an agreement was signed by the King which established a council of 25 barons that made sure John kept to the clauses in it.
Signed reluctantly, King John later denounced the Charter, labelling it as ‘illegal and unjust’.
The BBC summarised the main parts of the Magna Carta, which were that nobody is above the law, including the King, Everybody has the right to a fair trial, and those who are taxed should be allowed some sort of representation.
Many see the document as a major cornerstone of the idea of liberty for citizens, and the it is one of the most celebrated of it’s type in English history.
The document has also influence major constitutions around the world, such as the US Constitution and The Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
