Ten Minute English and British History #11 - King John and the Magna Carta

This episode covers the reign of King John and the problems he had securing the Angevin inheritance and the subsequent issues his baron's posed. These problems culminated in the signing of the Magna Carta in 1215 which severely limited the strength of John and his son, Henry III, whose reign was overshadowed by the document.

Ten Minute English and British History is a series of short, ten minute animated narrative documentaries that are designed as revision refreshers or simple introductions to a topic. Please note that these are not meant to be comprehensive and there's a lot of stuff I couldn't fit into the episodes that I would have liked to. Thank you for watching, though, it's always appreciated.

Fun fact: We are officially one quarter of the way through the series.

he wasn't called lackland because he lost land, he was called that because as a kid he didnt inherit any patch of land when his father died which his brothers did get. hence lackland

"It's treason, then."

I love this series so damn much. Partly for the dry wit, partly for the history, but mostly for the references.

King John was impressively so shit that, despite it being a very common name, we haven't had King John II after over 800 years.

There are 2 things which always seem to come up in almost all the episodes, the count of Flanders is some sort of rich super human, who is always so important, and the other is everyone keeps fucking dying

Are you telling me that a man just happens to fall like that? No! He orchestrated it! Jimmy!

My favourite King John moment was when he demanded 200 chickens from a noblewoman (Joan Neville) and in return he let her sleep with her husband for 1 night.

John's father Henry II actually gave him the nickname "Lackland" due at the time (1166) to their not being any land for John to inherit.

I am not crazy! I know he swapped those numbers. I knew it was 1216. One after Magna Carta. As if I could ever make such a mistake. Never. Never! I just – I just couldn’t prove it. He covered his tracks, he got that idiot at the copy shop to lie for him. You think this is something? You think this is bad? This? This chicanery? He’s done worse. That billboard! Are you telling me that a man just happens to fall like that? No! He orchestrated it! Jimmy! He defecated through a sunroof! And I saved him! And I shouldn’t have. I took him into my own firm! What was I thinking? He’ll never change. He’ll never change! Ever since he was 9, always the same! Couldn’t keep his hands out of the cash drawer! But not our Jimmy! Couldn’t be precious Jimmy! Stealing them blind! And HE gets to be a lawyer? What a sick joke! I should’ve stopped him when I had the chance! …And you, you have to stop him! You…

I think the nickname he was given after his defeats in France was actually 'Softsword', due to his military failures, whereas the nickname he was given as a boy was 'Lackland' because his father Henry II only left him money in his inheritance.

Nothing has changed.

The nickname Lackland was not due to losing land to France but to the fact that he was the youngest son & his parents had already divided up their lands among the older sons.
