A victim of circumstance, a king who did not, would not, accept limits on his behaviour, spending, and power. But in the end, a king who resisted what must have been an almost overwhelming temptation to go to war against his own high born people-- and he could have had a pretty good go at it, if he'd managed to get serfs, peasants, men tied and free, onto his side. If he had been as manipulating, greedy, and coniving as he's sometimes portrayed, he could definitely, with some false promises, some showy spending, have sandwiched the barons between royalty and low born, and possibly prevailed. It would have ruined England for hundreds of years, but John could have done it.

This was fascinating and very informative. Thank you very many much for all the research and hard work that went into actually making this doco, and for uploading it. The production itself was very well done. I thought I knew King John, but now realise I've still got a lot to learn.
I'm looking forward to hearing this again, as I go to sleep (please don't be offended, it's just you've got a calming narrative going here, and also I think I'll need more than one repeat to fully grasp KJ impact.
Thanks, kudos!

John is a fascinating failure.

And he was surrounded by so many epic people. William Marshal, Eleanor of Aquitaine, King Philip of France, etc.

I love these cause i can enjoy them as i work ir do chores around the house all the while this plays in the background.

Except for anything to do with English politics.
It takes ones absolute and full attention due to the constant web of connections and plethora of players involved in each story.

John was dealt a losing hand by his father and elder brother, who preceded him as king. He was a vigorus and active ruler who did the very best that could be done with the hand that was dealt him. He showed remarkable staying power, given all his enemies who were determined to overthrow him. He worked hard at his job right up to his dying day. He was loyal to his supporters who were loyal to him, and left his kingdom in honest and capable hands.  He insured the succession of his sons to the throne.

John was a capable administrator, but poor strategist, Richard I was a brilliant strategist but had no interest in administration of England🤷🏽 John had many faults, but wasn't the worst English king. The two I cannot split as the worst were Richard II and Henry VI. As always, brilliant documentaries, always learning something new.

One error — the narrator describes Arthur, Duke of Brittany, as Eleanor of Aquitaine’s nephew at 40:40. He was her grandson!

Fun Fact: The Magna Carta was wrote by Stephen Langton in a type of Latin that the king and none of the lords could read.

Excellent. The Magna Carta fascinates this man, and such telling as this is essential for import as to the importance of the Magna Carta to this day. I was unaware just how much influence the US Constitution writers, were influenced by this document, till quite recently.

I'm always very interested in English history. After watching this episode I have a better understanding of the Magna Carta. King John had a great impact on English law and should be known as the Father of Britain for all of his accomplishments. I felt kinda bad for him. In other words, "don't deal me that hand and I won't play my cards."

If I remember correctly Eleanor of Aquitaine was essential in raising the ransom for Richard. If I am correct, I don't believe that was mentioned in this Documentary and maybe it should have been.

Very adept and thorough account on the life and reign of King John. King John I believe had to adapt accordingly to the brutality of his time period. Even though he was treacherous and brutal, he really kind of had to be. His time era was literally kill or be killed.

What English kings will you cover next. I’d like to see videos for Henry IV and Henry VI. Also would like to see ones for William II and Henry I.

The period of time between Henry II and King John has to be one of the most dramatic periods in British History. The attack on Becket, Richard I and the 3rd Crusade and then Magna Carta. Just to name a few big events in a very short time period.
