I used to work for a general contractor and I know for a fact a good contractor could easily make one of these pay for itself. Just not having to run up and down a ladder for a pencil would pay for itself in a few jobs. Otherwise a $300 tape measure is an extreme luxury

Is the tape replaceable? I go through tapes fairly quickly on job sites and know the last foot of a tape takes a beating. I buy lifetime warranty taps because of this (DeWalt and Milwaukee). If the tape is replaceable, and even better lifetime guaranteed, allowing the expensive part to keep running - this is a winner IMO.
