My heart dropped when he said see how it easy it is when they trust you. Remaing vigilant over our own blind spots applies to so many areas of our life as leaders and teamates its mind blowing.

“…no…go on and see how easy it is…”

I gotta say, I’m not even in the military, and once I heard that, even I could feel the actual gravity of the situation. Very insightful.

This is the best approach, the two guys learned something, and I can guarantee it stuck with them. You do this in the fleet, you get to see the captain, lose half your paycheck and your freedom for two months at a minimum. Knew a guy that fell asleep on watch duty on the boat that had this happen. I bet those two guys would have chosen what happened a hundred times over what the fleet would do. They also learned something and it made them better sailors.

As a civilian, I couldn't imagine seal training being anything less than the story this guys telling. Thanks Bro for teaching those boys a lesson they needed to learn and something that will save Americans heros lives.

"See how easy it is when they trust you?" WOW, that gave me chills!

Thank you Men for being the best Men you can be.

Thinking "outside the box" probably saved these guys lives somewhere down the line. Thanks for treating our warriors like warriors and not ignoring their failures!

gotta say i would rather be trained by a person like this rather than a guy that wants to do everything to the book all the time ... Learning something a new way is NOT the worst thing ever ... sometimes people learn the hard way the best .

Never a dull moment when a navy seal is talking about BUD/s

My Dad was in USMC Recon. Their solution to anyone falling asleep on guard was to take a live grenade and get him to hold it and then pull the pin out. The next morning they put ithe back in the grenade. This had a very educational effect on everyone.

They did that to us in Marine Corps boot camp when our fire watches fell asleep. It definitely was impactful.

Instructors like that are like finding gold. I’d rather get lit up with a blue barrel and learn that information full of guilt for failing in training than learning the hard way in combat. Just like the scout snipers who got murdered with knives at close range in I believe 05. I was friends with their Plt chief scout who told me about it and felt an extreme amount of guilt because whoever was on watch that night fell asleep. I believe they were also stripped of all their kit if I remember right and they didn’t even know their buddies hide sight had been compromised until day break. Powerful stuff to learn in training instead of losing teammates and friends in combat. Spot on.

Man, I can vaguely remember the General Orders after being out 17 years now. (01-05) but I knew damn well to NEVER fall asleep on watch. I learned that the hard way in Boot camp. My rover went to the head and chose to abandon me to sneak in some sleep in a stall. RDC's found him snoring and they beat us hard for about 30 minutes but to teach us a life lesson, they woke up the ENTIRE division (about 75 of us at 2am) to "Make it Rain". I lost count at 200 Standing 8 counts. They cycled RDC's beating us until 4am. (Making it "rain" is when you are worked out intensely until condensation drips from the ceiling.)

Afterwards, they sat us down and reminded us that we, as Men, gave our WORD to our Brothers, Our Country and that Beautiful flag our Grandfathers died for. We saw him as a brutal monster but he got emotional because our RDC was an FMF Corpsman. Their sworn duty is to train, live with and fight alongside the almighty USMC. They save Marines' lives. That's a sacred duty you CANNOT take likely. He has lost Marines and you could see it hurt his soul. He never told us how but he made sure manning the Watch was instilled in us. He didn't want us to feel the type of deep DEEP pain he was dealing with.

I NEVER FORGOT THAT and thank the stars that I learned that lesson young because my whole enlistment changed on September 11th, 2001. Little did I know my role in the military was going to drastically change and send me downrange.

I kicked a recruit in basic training for sleeping on shift (twice)... I was a recruit myself. After leaving the service I worked for a private security firm securing a base in the middle east. I was doing my rounds as a shift manager and found one guard on a guard tower with all his gear off and sleeping on the counter. I pulled him of the counter and dropped him on the floor. On this first contract the company seems to have hired from the bottom of the barrel, a lot of people I would not trust on my left or right in battle even if they are awake.

I remember having those eye-opening moments, and they were invaluable. In the mid-2000s, '06 '07, they were becoming few and far between... it's like the training slowly became softer all because one or two people complained about 'that's not fair' or got hurt. It is crazy how training is seemingly getting more delicate despite KNOWING harder; more intense training improves outcomes.

Am I the only private that ever enjoyed standing guard while everyone else was asleep? Made me feel like a real soldier doing an important job... which was true ☝️

The mind, heart and spirit of a true warrior. I was captivated from the start. Thank god for strong men like this. WIthout them, there would be no society worth protecting

"how it easy it is when they trust you" endless depth and gravity in those few simple words, regardless the type of releationship.

Ohhh I can’t wait to see the whole interview! Not every situational engagement will have you going by the book! Knowing the book is one thing, being able to discern outside of the book is another!
