I was expecting this video to actually explain "how to tether" via USB (e.g. with an Android phone) since the video description on the "iMore" webpage literally says, "How to tether." Instead you just show it plugged in, which does not address my problem (the computer isn't recognizing internet access even though USB tethering is turned on and the device is connected).

False advertising is bad, mmkay.

What mac are you using?...I use bluetooth and have connection just as fast as Wifi.  I'm using latest macbook air with bluetooth 4.0 and iPhone 5

The upsides to usb tethering can be beneficial. (When you receive a call while usb tethering, your connection remains connected) (Usb tether uses your mobile data and not your limited hotspot data) Those are only 2 upsides and now, the downside. Should read more

Your phone's data availability is important. Phone needs to be charged and...
Must meet Carrier policies -
°Risk your phone being throttled, (they can significantly reduce your connection speeds LTE, 3g, etc...)
°Disconnected from Service
(Your phone's model information is flagged and is restricted from obtaining service ever bye bye)

Be careful and don't abuse the policies you promised to obey. You accepted there terms of service and possibly some of Google's services as well. Federal and Government court systems is indeed involved in all Mobile Industries worldwide. It all depends on there "terms" and service.
