Small Engine Stops Without Choke On

You start your (lawnmower, snow blower, chipper, tiller), and it dies when you open up the choke. Very frustrating! But it's a simple fix. It's usually a clogged jet (the bolt at the bottom of the carburetor bowl that holds it on). Clamp the fuel line, clean out the jet, and you're fixed!

See how in this short video. You can do it; you're a homesteader!

I am a small engine mechanic and I like the way he explained everything and I can tell for the most part. He knows what he’s doing and that little hole that you seen him stick the bread tie through most people do not even know that little wee hole is in that bolt at all and that little boat is so important as you seen….

Thank you for the tips. That giant roaring bird at the end was terrifying!

Well done, but you overlooked the other set of holes. These are extremely tiny ports located at the top of the threads, and for individuals of our age, they are difficult to notice, often leading to similar symptoms. Thank you!

Fantastic instructional video! I inherited my niece's grandfather's old Ariens snowblower that has this exact symptom-it will shut off if the choke is not fully open. I am going to give this fix a try today.

Generator would run about 3/4 choke. Very clean carb and even the same with a brand new carb. Kept drilling the main jet out and got better snd better but i had it pretty big and still not quite right. I put my thumb over the intake port and cranked with the electric starter. Almost no vacuum. Problem isnt in the carb.

How old is the snowblower? I didn’t know the main jet was part of the float bowl bolt, I thought it was up in the carburetor more above the float?

The fuel line you clamped off is for the primer, won’t shut off the flow of fuel ???

Thanks for that. Cleaned the carb but didn't realise about the holes in that bolt! One question, why do Americans wash off the shell protection on eggs so you then have to refrigerate them?
