the “architecture” isn’t to reduce social interaction, it’s to get rid of homeless people

Everybody is waking up. We need communities again. I never want to look at another dating app. I want to buy a house! I want to enjoy my job! I want to sell my car!

I'm a teen, and it's really hard to hang out with my friends. we have to drive/be driven everywhere we want to go, which requires planning, and are restricted by what we can do and where we can go by cost and distances in ways teens wouldn't have been in the past. so when people ask why young people are online so much, it's because what should be supplemental has become a lifeline, as the real world has become increasingly hostile towards people enjoying physical spaces together.

It's so sad and on top of that because we are always inside and on our phones most people don't know how to talk to each other and carry a conversation

It's not just recently - American cities used to be beautiful and full of life, and then the car company lobbyists drove highways through them and subsidized sprawl. Go to literally any other country, and every city has tons of places to just hang out for every age group. It's like that here in Montreal.

Rememer guys, if you guys can't find a proper zone to chill. You always have the woods.

It is not an America only problem. It is worldwide. Australian suburbs are just as isolating and depressing.

When we were in high-school, we would hang at the mall even if we werent shopping because it was easy to chill there, walk around, and had easy access to food. Then our mall died and idk where teens go now.

Wow! You just answered my question on another nostalgia video about third spaces. We definitely DO need the corner stores and cafes! Walking distance.
Who’s dumb idea was it to delete those options?

I lived up in Portland for 20 years, and by 2019, one of the hangouts was TACO TRUCKS! I’m not even kidding.
We have a place where there’s food from across the globe, at least 20-30 different trucks, they have awnings and picnic tables. It’s in a parking lot out back from a strip mall. The place was always packed!
They didn’t close till around 2 AM. I didn’t have a car at the time, so of course I showed up.
I remember writing about the weirdness of this situation.

It wasn’t until a few years later I heard the third space theory, and it fit! And I mean all the tribes were there! Everybody milling around at midnight like it was a farmer’s market, only they’re kicking back eating and laughing, families, date nights. It was truly bizarre.

Makes sense now.

I live in a rural area and it is incredibly isolating. There are no places to hang out near me whatsoever, the nearest places that aren’t farms or houses are at least fifteen minutes away by car.

The mall is on its last legs, any fast food places are too small to hang out in, there are no sidewalks/benches…the only way to spend time with friends is by hanging out at each others’ houses.

There are legitimately no other options, my boyfriend and I struggle to even diversify our dates because our choices are so limited and we’re broke from how hard it is to get a job and earn good money these days.

Honestly, I so consistently run into such psychotic and reckless drivers (many of which drive armed with guns) that i literally made my therapy session today virtual, simply because being on the road to go to the session genuinely makes me that anxious. People hate their lives rn, and all you need to see to realize that is someone willing to murder someone in traffic over being flipped off.

Love regulations and laws making everything harder.

One of the consequences of this is that there aren't as many strong communities that could function as a non-government locus of power. If the government becomes more authoritarian, public life will likely retreat into private homes rather than having communities that can actively resist. This means defeat in detail for the opposition and much greater difficulty in actually getting rid of an authoritarian government.

My hatred of car centric environments grows every day. Almost wanna stop driving out of spite because I can get away with it

And yet you still get Americans who scream "AT LEAST I HAVE FREEDUM" 😅

This is so sad. I graduated HS in "04" so I have watched this happen.

Wow! This is a massively important issue. It’s funny how we loose things we took for granted. We don’t know WHEN or WHY it happened.
I think my generation is so used to having the mat pulled out from under us, we just pick up and keep it moving.
But WE HAD THAT.

And I’m just now realizing some generations didn’t even get to experience it!

Well, it’s now up to You, Young Bloods to bring this up, back, and build. GEN X WILL HELP. Maybe just not enough of us took the time to listen or understand, and for that, I apologize.

Something does need to be done about it. I don’t agree with loss of third spaces AT ALL!

No country hates Americans more than America. It's impossible. 100k federal laws and tens of thousands of state laws _per state, _ over 20% of the world's prison population, and now it's a felony to be homeless but not so to make you homeless. Our culture - or lack thereof - is one where it's every man for himself, the weak are punished, victims are blamed, "undesireables" are culled, community is devalued, and relative positioning determines what is deserved.

I don't want to hear another word in defense of this ruthless, Darwinian hellhole.

Same thing in Canada as well. There's no 3rd place. You go to work and you go home. When there's social events, very few attendance. I didn't know that after school ended you'd essentially be isolated. No more third place
