What Environmental Engineers Do | Environmental Compliance

In this video, I explain what I do as an Environmental Engineer. For all you environmental engineers out there, you may be doing something different, such as designing, despite both of us having the same title. My role at my facility is mostly in compliance rather than design. I've seen some job titles such as Environmental compliance specialists and environmental health and safety engineers do the exact same thing as I do, so the job title itself may be misleading.

I'm currently still in high school and thinking about pursuing a field in Environmental Engineering. In the video, you stated you are on a military base. Does the field allow/have you travel and how would that work if you were to raise a family. Also, do most people in the field get a phD? In other words, if I didn't get a phD, would that be a big difference In a job interview. Another question if you don't mind, what is a good minor in terms of having Environmental Engineering as my Major? What are some of your regrets with choosing this field? Last question, do you work as a consultant, or a full blown employee working 12 months out of the year? Furthermore, thank you for reading and any help is appreciated. :)

Thank you so much!! You helped me a lot. As a student I am thinking also that after I graduate I will do designing, AutoCAD, and etc. I don't want that. The work I want is in the field of science about air, solid wastes, recycling it, all about saving the environment! Thank you so much! Because of your video I stopped myself for thinking on switching to environmental science and stop to be engineer. You saved me! 💖 Don't stop making video about that

Hi! Great Video! I wish I had someone explain this to me when I was still in school. :)

I’m also surprised at how different my education was to the actual work I do now. I graduated with an env. engr. focusing on energy and learned a lot about renewables and nuclear while in school. But in my current work, I’m more of a consultant for large buildings (coaching building operators on ways to save energy in their O&M processes). It’s a whole sector of the field I never thought of before but it’s really big.

Hi Randy thanks for the video. It was very insightful. I’m a community college student about to transfer to a 4 year university to finish my undergrad classes for environmental engineering and was honestly worried that I might end up hating my career choice by being stuck behind a computer screen. I chose this career path because I wanted to make a impact fighting climate change while being active outdoors. Would you say there are good opportunities to work in the field in the list you had during the video? And if you could change to something else in your list other than waste management what would it be?

Hey randy, I am in the process of working on completing my environmental engineering degree and I had a few questions. What did you do to gain experience to get a job? I know many jobs even entry level, want us to have experience. Any advice?

Your videos are great! I’m currently in grade 12 and considering a enviro engineering. I was also considering civil engineering to. I want to end up in a career that doesn’t involve sitting in a desk all day and would rather be working on a site. For enviro engineering do you feel like it satisfied the not being in a “desk job” type situation? When I look up this career I get various answers of people working in an office or on site. Also If you get through enviro engineering can you switch to civil if you do not like the program?

I'm interviewing for an environmental company today, with the job title Environmental Field Technician. The job looks highly technical, but it doesn't require a degree. A lot of the job duties fall under the categories you listed, including hazardous materials, storage tanks, etc. Is this a good way to get industry experience while working towards becoming an environmental engineer, or compliance specialist?
