An an environmental engineer myself, I would say that this video is super accurate! A couple of notes; civil engineering is also a very similar major. Lots of env engineers I know go into civil engineering later in their careers if they focus more on water resources. Water resources is a sort of hybrid between civil and env. Basically, if you get a civil eng degree, you can easily make the transition to environmental work down the line. If you study environmental you can also break into the civil world if that is of interest to you. Chemical engineers do well in environmental engineering roles that are more focused on environmental chemistry (no surprise there). Mechanical engineers actually do really well in the green energy field since a lot of us env engineers do not have the background or training to support more of the mechanical side of things (optimizing solar panel performance for example).

You just gave me a really good idea for a college major. Every other type of degree relating to the environment tends to pay pretty low but this one has a good salary range. I love the environment, want to help save it, yet care a lot about my personal well-being.

HA me graduating in 3 weeks from Purdue with an environmental engineering degree about to watch this

An idea for a new series: how to get experiences for each degree, like what kind of interns or skills you need and how to build them for careers with that degree

as someone who's been in industry for two years as an environmental engineer, the skillsets i recommend: UNDERSTAND regulations (super important), chemistry, AutoCAD, Civil3D, and ArcGIS.. my program was more related to chemical engineering so market yourself as much as you can for more pay! it is a more new degree so during interviews try to bring up as much relevant skills and courses you think can benefit the role/company you're applying for.

Currently in my third year as an environmental engineering student, glad to say I made the right choice!

Hi y’all!
Being an environmental engineer I would like to add that doing this degree would be the best choice anyone can have!
Job nature is technically so interesting. You will love this because of its multidisciplinary domains.

I am working in a Food packaging Industry and working as a compliance engineer, industries love hire engineers and for the environment concerns every good companies hire us for legal environmental legislations as well as compliance of Environmental, Quality, health and Safety of their manufacturing products.

I also worked in a Waste Management company and working practically in solid waste management projects is so interesting. Scientifically we are the only one who provide solutions for the handling and practices of waste management.

Waste to energy is also a major concern where world is focusing.
I have also internship experience in yeh water and wastewater domain so choosing this degree was the best choice of my life and I am enjoying in my work and in research as well!

I completed a B.Eng in environmental engineering, and it's definitely an interesting program where you learn more than advertised in this video, though the breadth of topics covered changes depending on what school/program you choose.

To start, you may not feel like you're studying environmentally-related material during the first few years; you'll be doing multiple calculus courses, courses on differential equations and infinite series, courses in linear algebra, and even courses where you learn how to solve differential equations using numerical methods by writing code -- lots of math. In the first couple of years, you'll also have to get through the "tough" engineering courses like fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, etc.

Toward the middle of your degree, you'll start to notice topics related to the environment (geotechnical mechanics, environmental chemistry, chemical reaction engineering, the physics of contaminant transport through various media, etc.) but note these courses are still meant to be fundamental.

Toward the end of your degree, you can expect a variety of courses covering core environmental engineering topics (some of which are mentioned in this video) like air pollution controls design and emissions mitigation, municipal hydraulics (designing pipelines, water conveyance systems) solid and hazardous waste management, drinking water and waste water principles and design, contaminant hydrogeology, among others.

In my experience, you'll have a great foundation of knowledge to carry with you to a professional career or graduate studies. However, if you want to focus on a specific issue, you may want to consider graduate school -- if this is your plan, be sure to look into professors who study your topic of interest during you undergraduate degree. Get to know them and try and do research for them during your undergrad. You'll feel much more prepared to tackle graduate-level work by doing so.

Note that whatever engineering discipline you decide to study in your undergrad., you will not be limited to choosing a graduate program directly related to your undergrad (if you decide to take this route). For example, I'm doing an M.ASc focused on modeling the physics of how green roofs save energy and will eventually transition this work into a building energy simulation program. However, other people in my research group have backgrounds in mechanical and civil engineering, etc. In short, your education will only open doors to new opportunities.

Overall, studying environmental engineering was one of the best decisions I've ever made.

Environmental is a branch of civil engineering, so if you still wanted to pursue the field while still being flexible to work in other fields, taking the general civil then specializing in environmental gives you the most benefits cause you aren't limited in your scope while also pursuing what you wanted.

I don't need money. I just want to save the earth, the mother earth is dying because of us .My first choose is to be computer engineering but some reason i dont want to make more technologies the more technology the more nature is dying ..So i really choose to be environmental engineering i want to save the earth us much as i can..

Not in every country. I graduated 1 year ago. I'm living in Turkey i'm Turkish person. I obsessed with my job and i can work on wastewater management, air pollution modelling and solid sollution however the salary is the dark side of this job. Additionaly in my country this job entegrated to Health Safety. So we are not happy in here. I know 3 language, i have degree in university about Env. Engineering but they want to HSE also. Lol its really funny. If yoy will live in Turkey you shouldnt become an Environmental engineer. I hope i can help someone living in Turkey.

The curriculum for environmental engineering and chemical engineering are very similar to the point we're in the same department in my university. If the curriculum is taken into account, I see less of an issue to comparing us

I would also recommend attending outreach events by colleges and universities about the degrees they offer if you're still unsure of what to go for. There's also an undecided route which gives you about 2 years to decide while you complete general required courses

Thank you so much for these vids, they've helped me narrow down my options so much. You should do a video on if Data Science majors/careers are worth it if you haven't already :)
