Why Mindy Kaling is getting so much hate online right now

Everyone’s been in love with Mindy Kaling ever since her breakout role as Kelly Kapoor on The Office, but due to a recent string of issues, fans are starting to see her in a new light... Still, her recent win at the PGA Awards shows she clearly still has a lot of people in her corner, and she doesn’t seem to be concerned with what haters have to say.

"Just because you're an Indian loser dosen't mean Indians are losers" feels like something a character in one of her shows would say.

So basically Mindy's schtick has gotten old and refuses to update her material.

And why are all of her characters completely self-absorbed and the absolute WORST possible friends?!?!

Yep sounds like sexual harassment. Her co-star should sue.

I think this goes back to the need for diversity in storytelling and what Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie says about stereotypes making one story everyone's story. If Kaling is the only South Asian (or desi) person with the clout to get her shows made, her perspective becomes the only perspective on that culture.

Ik Mindy was bullied as a teen and I felt bad for her, yet turns out she’s a mean girl now who’s repeating an overused revenge fantasy in her work 😒

The problem isn't that she's making shows about insecure Indian girls, but that the ONLY shows about Indian girls are the ones she's making about insecure Indian girls. Simone Ashley is basically the only other example we have.

And none of the main characters in any of her shows are ugly, (at least to me) so it’s weird to see her still calling them that…

The one TikTok mentioned her fetishizing white men—this might get me a lot of hate, but I really think we need to have more conversations around that. We talk about white guys fetishizing other races, but it goes the other way too. I’ve met Asian women who’ve straight-up said they would never date an Asian man & that they only go for white guys, and I find it…pretty strange.

As an Indian girl, I loved her series Never Have I Ever but not because the protagonist is Indian but because it's so relatable and refreshing as sm1 who's teenage wasn't good at all. That series is amazing but I don't think the trope of insecure Indian girl desperate for white male attention should be repeated in every series. Indians are proud of their intelligent citizens. It's considered good to be a bright student in India not uncool.

As a middle aged black person, at first I was just happy to see some black shows on TV in the 70's. But it soon became clear that that wasn't close to being enough, especially since they were all sitcoms with exaggerated characters (if not outright caricatures of black people). I would imagine that some Indian Americans have experienced pretty much the same thing.

And for non-white writers, I understand that there's a lot of pressure to write to attract white people (or at least to satisfy what executives think white people want to see), and that's generally going to conflict with genuine, multi-faceted depictions of non-white people. And it's not only white people who are prejudiced against Indian Americans, and there aren't enough Indian Americans to support network television shows on their own. Not a great situation for creators or for audiences.

If she were a man she would have been cancelled and kicked off the planet for "improvising a kiss with her co star" which is the most polite way I've ever heard anyone say they sexually harassed someone.

Charlie Grandy deserves blame too since he helped created and write the show.

You DON'T improvise a kiss. You kiss someone while the cameras are rolling without consent.

Yeahhh the "tell anyone and you're fired" thing definitely made me see her in a new and non flattering light. It's a shame cause I always have really liked her and thought she was really funny/

And then there's some of us who've never liked Mindy. It's me, I'm some of us. As an Indian woman myself I found her to be disingenuous. Something never felt quite right about her (to me, anyways)
