What is a basis for the column space of a matrix? How do I find a basis for column space?

Hey sorry to ask a stupid question but I’m taking linear algebra in the summer and we have only 4 weeks to learn it with a test every week. It is going extremely fast. I have a question regarding a pivot. Are pivots just the numbers on the diagonal that have a 0 under it? How is the negative 1 a pivot? Thanks!
