Ultimate Guide: Elden Ring Best Damage Type for Shadow of the Erdtree
In this Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree video, we're gonna be talking about what is the best damage type for the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC. If you planning on making a build and you're going for maximum damage, what damage type should you be focusing on. I will be going through the eight damage types in the game which are Standard, Slash, Strike, Pierce, Magic, Fire, Lightning and Holy. I will be ranking them and explain their ranking and why you might want to focus on a certain damage type.

One thing to take into account is the number of boss fights that happen in water, which is pretty significant (putrescent knight, golden hippos, some of the death dragons, metyr, etc.). Water increases lightning damage by 10% and decreases fire damage by the same, which makes me think lightning probably edges out fire in a couple more cases.

You're probably already planning on it, but I'd love to see a similar video for the various status buildup types (bleed, sleep, etc)

People hate on Fextra but these guys do their best to put accurate information out there and have quality content.

Hey Fextra, I cannot thank you enough for all of your hard work since the start of the dlc last month. Go at it 🍺💯

vs bosses, seems spot on.

including non-boss mobs throughout the DLC, fire is IMO a clear winner.

Pierce damage is the best damage type in base game (according to Youwy's ranking). And now Pierce damage is the best damage type in DLC too.

you forgot something important; many of the bosses in the DLC are standing in large pools of water making fire far worse and lightning far better

You may think about a video dealing with complementary damage types and adapting builds. You did it a bit here, but things like STR/FAI weapon builds have both holy and fire available in pretty much equal amounts (and standard/strike) based on a quick AoW or weapon affinity change. FAI casting build have holy and lightening in spades (and DEX/FAI). DEX is primarily associated with lightening, pierce, and slash. INT build have Magic and Cold - and while cold isn't that huge of a damage type, proccing frostbite and then switching to magic. I use this "toolset" mindset when playing and adjusting to different fights. Arcane is the one primary stat that seems all over the place, so I'm not sure an easy way to parse this. ;)

I'm just glad they gave some love to Piercing and Holy Damage as my favorite is the heavy lance with golden land...

Thank you, I’ve lost motivation for sote, third playthrough was twin blades and haven’t been feeling it, this basically reinforced my idea of rebirthing for a new build.

I really do think it’s important that one considers the placement of fights, if you think about the placement of so many bosses in water fire and lightning really need to be moved around, for example, despite being weakest to fire, golden hippo is in water so it becomes one of his strongest resistances actually while lightning changes to one of his weaknesses, there are tons of similar examples, for that reason I think lighting really needs to be moved up higher in the list and fire could even be dropped to last

I completely avoided any form of media about the DLC ‘til I beat it like last week, and I was using a Starscourge Greatsword build (not probably the best optimized build, but I loved the weapon), which does a good chunk of magic as its dmg type. Not saying this video said magic was ineffective/unusable, but at least on NG, I was able to get through it just fine (I struggled but I feel like it was just the aggression of the bosses more than anything, I did mean dmg to almost all of them) for the most part.

Radahn was still mean, but I think he’s just particularly difficult. Can’t say he was fun to fight 😅😅

Great video, this is definitely a good topic to explore, and the general gameplay experiences aren't dramatically different in my experience as far as spread goes; most of these resistances are similar throughout the DLC when dealing with roaming minibosses and majors. I'm rather appreciative for the Holy damage actually mattering in the DLC, it really enables you to support a lot of build variety for Faith+X builds. While Magic tends to falter a bit throughout the game, as you mentioned it has so many opportunities to leverage buffs and great tactical choices that the issue can sort of balance itself out (and has a lot of great poise-breaking benefits too).
