🌊 The Spiny Scallop: The Jet-Propelled Shell of BC! 🐚💨

Hidden along the rocky seafloor of British Columbia’s coast, the Spiny Scallop (Chlamys hastata) is one of the most unique bivalves in the Pacific Northwest! Unlike most shellfish that stay put, these scallops can swim! By rapidly clapping their shells, they jet through the water to escape predators like sea stars.

Though not commonly harvested, Spiny Scallops are key to a healthy marine ecosystem, filtering plankton and keeping our waters clean. Seeing one in the wild is always a special find!
