SOUTH KOREA IS OVER

Sources & further reading:

South Korea is heading toward a demographic collapse unlike anything the world has seen before. With the lowest fertility rate ever recorded and a rapidly aging population, the country faces a future of economic decline, shrinking cities, cultural erosion, and a vanishing workforce.
By 2060, nearly half of South Koreans could be over the age of 65, and entire regions may be abandoned as the population continues to shrink.
How did South Korea reach this point? Why might it no longer be possible to reverse the trend? And what does this mean for other countries on a similar path?

It's almost as if when you neglect the economical needs of younger people, you get less younger people

South Korean here, We are all aware of the problem, and government is virtually doing nothing. Wish us good luck!

As a Korean, I did my military service and graduated from university. Now I’m working 75 hours a week at a company, of course, with no overtime pay or night shift allowance. I make around $2, 200 a month, and I don’t own a house or a car. If I want to buy a home, I’d have to save for over 10 years while spending the bare minimum. Just taking care of myself is already a struggle, so the idea of getting married and starting a family isn’t even something I can imagine.

Wow, that's the first kurzgesagt video starting with "we are doomed" and also ending with "yeah, we really are doomed"

There's a quote I heard that goes like
"When the older generation dies their wisdom dies with them. When the younger generation dies all hope dies with them."

The biggest problem is that trying to raise birth rates requires treating people as people instead of workers, and with corporations running the world that won't happen.

I am a Korean college student. Currently, Korean corporate interviewers only hire experienced workers, and they do not hire young workers. When they actually join, they put tremendous pressure on young new employees. My older sister was also pressured. Also, young people spend $2, 000 to $3, 000 a month for two children until they become adults. However, young people earn $2, 500 to $3, 500 a month for full-time workers. Part-time workers earn even less. Therefore, it is almost impossible to raise children, but the elderly in Korea only criticize young people for not having

Wait! Are you telling me that paying pennies for extremely long working hours is causing younger generations to have fewer kids because financial insecurity makes it harder to plan for a family or even meet people to establish a relationship with? I’m speechless...

It is crazy to me how the Korean Peninsula managed to somehow fit both a Stalinist Dictatorship and a Cyberpunk Dystopia in it

This video should be dubbed and captioned in Korean too. Might help reach a wider audience and help them out.

Real talk.. As a person in south korea in 30s, I wake up at 5AM and go to sleep at 9PM. I don't have money for a house and I have to take care of my old parents. Can I make a baby? Hell no. I can't even meet a woman now, since I got no time for it. And some people argue that I didn't try hard enough to get a better job, and those people soon get surprised when they hear that I went to one of the best university in korea with 4 years of scholarship.

As a Korean I can say this never will be solved. Because, under the majority rule, the young generation can never beat the elderly.
A few days ago, the Korean National Assembly passed a bill in the name of reform to increase the current pension amount by covering more costs for young people. They argue that young people also receive increased benefits. However, it is very easy to predict whether or not pension funds will remain in 40 years.

1. Make women work
2. Make men work even more
3. Make work conditions absolutely abysmal for both
4. Ignore housing issues completely

Gee, I wonder why nobody's having kids over there

I feel bad that all Korean comments in this video are like
'Yeah, we already know, but we can't fix it. Society and politicians are not into it.'
