Thick strings have 1. less tension, 2. greater amplitude, 3. lower acoustic dispersion. Thinner strings are the opposite: more tension, shorter amplitude, higher acoustic dispersion. You must play each thicker string with softer touch (lower dynamics) to even out amplitude discrepancies across strings. That may help create an even scale, or any melody, regardless of what you play.

I'd be curious what the actual volume of each string is. I'd imagine that because of the increased mass, he's actually playing lighter but keeping the output fairly even.
