Linux Terminal Basics: chown, chgrp - File Ownership

preview_player
Показать описание
chown and chgrp Linux terminal commands are used to change the owner and group of files and folders. Very useful to use on removable media and other internal harddrives.

Usage:
chown name:group -hR folder/
chgrp group -hR folder/

Ahhh, it's been so long since we've got one these good quidsup tutorials. I for one appreciate how he gets right to the point without much fluff, and presents it so that users new to Linux can understand and yet the vets don't spam the comments. I suggest that all future quidsup tuts (hence forth known as Q-Tuts) have " + Great Wallpaper " added to the title :)

If something doesn't work, I would have mindlessly used chmod 777 on anything

It is very informative, I really appreciate it.

Now if only you had released this video on the weekend when I was struggling to change permissions on a Linux box. It was a struggle compared to Windows and I still don't know how they work. Will check out your video to hopefully fill the gap!

Don't recall using these commands that much, maybe a possible security issue?

ever thought about using a different shell other than /bin/bash? fish and zsh are quite nice, especially with oh-my-zsh/oh-my-fish. powerful and quite customizable! maybe you can do a video about discussing different shells in GNU/Linux :)
have a good one!

+quidsup minor typo in line under 'Published on....', chgrep should be chgrp maybe ?

I usually read these command as /chown/ and /chgrp/, not chown and chgrp

The most useful command I know is the unoconv command which I am using to convert my odt files into pdf files.
