What scares you about running? Is it the hills? Is it the uphill motion? Do hills make you tired? THEY SHOULD! You’re fighting gravity, dirt, mud, sometimes, snow, and yes, your biomechanics. If your biomechanics are not close to picture perfect, your uphill running is going to much more difficult than it needs to be. Forefoot striking is the easiest and most natural way to ascend the hills and mountains. Basically you are creating a biomechanics spring with your forefoot, fascia tendon, and right on up to the soleus and calves. Over time, with light springing in place on a slope, you will build up the strength and suppleness that you need for ascending these mountains in front of you. Watch through this uphill running vlog and let me know what questions you have about this uphill technique. I look forward to answering your questions. Lastly, the question of the day is a tough one. We all have battles in our lives that we face really every single day. What uphill battle are you facing right now, in training and or in life?

Up!

QD: I think for me personally, my uphill battle would have to be the age at which I began running. I so wish that I had discovered this amazing sport much sooner than I had, at a much lower weight. Thankfully, I reversed one of those variables!

I loved your use of the mic in this vlog Seth, nice work!

My current uphill battle is dealing with grief. I must admit that a long hiatus from running, about 5 years but lately running has brought some relief. I find that watching your videos every morning on my way to the trail serves as motivation and helps to bring me into focus. Thank you for sharing your life and videos with us. I really appreciate it. I can't wait to get a couple of your shirts and will proudly wear them as a reminder to.... "Seek beauty, work hard and love each other"💕

When it comes to shooting and editing; a lot of heart and soul went into that first 4 minutes of this video. Thank You!

Checking out old videos on running uphill. I think uphill is my weakness and there's not even a flat 5k here in the Appalachian Mts. It's nice to hear you talking about your focus on Pikes Peak in 2019, knowing now that you'll win the marathon on 2020 and 21.

Came for the content. Stayed for the great video. Was able to see a bit of how you prepare for runs. We all have our routines. Thanks Seth

Love the video. I work at uphill running a lot. I have plenty of room for improvement but I love the feeling of going uphill.

Up! QOD: having life challenges all at once, the wife keeps on pushing for baby nr4, me wanting to leave it at 3, because we bought a house and I have to get the whole house renovated, family has to move during the works, etc, etc, ... don't see how we can combine it. But gotta move forward! On the running side, I love long uphills because it requires you to balance your effort depending on terrain and grade. Powerhiking is part of it, and not a bad solution. Sometimes powerhiking is faster than running. But it's possibly one of the most "visual" means to figure out your fitness level. A certain hill at the beginning of a training block and at the end, the feeling can be sooo much different. And then, look down and see what you've accomplished. And that dessert... Nothing like running downhill 3, 4, 5... miles. And while you do it, don't forget to open your arms, open your arms! Open your arms, feel the freedom, fly down, feel free! Such a great feeling!

Seth, thank you for sharing these techniques on uphill trail running! Was having knee pain and ankle pain sometimes, after 8 plus miles of vertical and decent.
Applied your recommendations and wallah!!! Felt so good 👍 being able to work the correct muscles - faster too. Thanks a lot, I'll try to spread the word on this channel.
Don't know what you're up to these days, but I wish you success; you're a bolt of energy.

I've been injured for the past month. I've gone from running six days a week to zero days but I am walking good distances again. I really hope to be back soon. It's been tough. Another great vlog. Thanks.

Thanks so much for the hill running tips! I always wondered about foot placement going uphill, whether I should land all the way down to my heels or not. Very few training videos mention that! I’m definitely going to work on that since I have mostly hilly areas to run. The Seattle area is not flat! I run both road and trails so this will be fun to try. My uphill battle is running more mileage in a hilly area without injury! My family uphill battle, is getting all my kids through college! Yikes! Start saving for your boys now!

Yea, that’s right, I’m 2 years back in your catalogue Seth, channeling some uphill energy for tomorrow’s run with some new trail shoes on a vertical gain workout, well as much vertical gain as I can get here in flat Saskatchewan. Glad I get to start my days with your vlogs brother.

the cadence comes from the 3-axis accelerator, which is inside the watch. It measures movement to every direction.

Great tips on uphill running, Seth! It's definitely a skill to acquire, especially if you're coming off a background of mostly flat road running. My uphill battle is creating more running videos for my channel!

I count in my head to help the rhythm of my breathing. I also focus a few yards ahead or to the side of the road.

On arm swing technique: shorten the pendulum by increasing the bend at the elbow, and come closer to mid-line, heart to collarbone height. You can swing faster this way with the shortened pendulum. This most importantly decreases energy expenditure. Swing from the shoulder with rib cage rotation. Just watch almost all top distance runners, especially the Africans, they have way less than 90° elbow bend. I made this change to my arm carriage/swing. My arms feel so much better and have less fatigue as well as my legs in the longer distances. Oh yeah, and I run much faster! Works well hill climbing too...keep pumping right Seth!?
