While most asteroids burn up as soon as they enter the Earth's atmosphere, some larger asteroids, after entering the planet, may cause severe damage to human life.
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has recently warned of three gigantic asteroids approaching Earth in coming days of august 2023.
Additionally, NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory noted that Earth will have some relatively close encounters with asteroids in the coming days. According to NASA, three asteroids are approaching our planet, with one already having its closest approaches to Earth on 21st August.
NASA's Asteroid Watch dashboard tracks asteroids and comets that will make relatively close approaches to Earth. The dashboard displays the date of the closest approach, approximate object diameter, relative size and distance from Earth for each encounter.
NASA has named the first asteroid 2023 PM1 and put it under the category of Earth Close Approaches list. They have revealed that an asteroid of that size could do serious damage if it collides with Earth. It has also been found that it is expected to pass Earth on August 21 at a distance of just under 31 lakh kilometres from the planet. However, the distance is considered a lot, but as it is travelling at a speed of 64,800 km/h, NASA believes that there are chances that it could change its direction and come closer to Earth.
The second asteroid to visit us on 22nd August is 2023 PM. This one is airplane-sized, about 206 feet, and will pass by at approximately 36 lakhs kilometers from Earth at a speed of 28,800 km h.
The third asteroid 1988 EG and is the biggest of the trio. NASA estimates EG measures roughly between 800 ft and 1300 ft. The asteroid will approach the planet on 23
August within 6 million kilometers at a speed of 50,400 km/h.
It is worth mentioning that NASA's dashboard is dedicated to monitoring asteroids and comets that approach Earth relatively closely. The dashboard provides details such as the closest approach date, the estimated diameter of the object, its relative size, and the distance from Earth for each encounter.
It tracks asteroids that come within a range of 7.5 million kilometres from Earth.
Over 30,000 asteroids, ranging in size, including more than 850 with a diameter of one kilometre or larger, have been identified and categorized as Near Earth Objects in the vicinity of our planet. However, none of these asteroids pose a threat to Earth within the next century.
Presently, there is no need for humans to be worried, but NASA has estimated that if such a big stone that is travelling at a high speed is moving so close to the Earth, then it could be a big threat to humans as the Earth wouldn't be able to defend it.
Due to this, NASA is developing a defense mechanism against such asteroids. Last year, they launched a double asteroid redirection test mission. It allowed the organisation to detect the orbit of an asteroid called Dimorphos.
