NASA raises Warning of Three Massive Asteroids by End of July 2024

Earth is surrounded by rocky bodies and bits of debris from when the solar system formed roughly 4.5 billion years ago.

The threat of asteroids or comets impacting Earth is a very real concern, though there are multiple sky surveys looking for potentially hazardous asteroids (PHA). This week, three massive asteroids will pass closely by Earth just days apart one on Thursday, one on Friday and another one on Saturday morning.

The asteroids are so large that an impact could destroy our planet. But their closeness and likelihood of being visible—for those with telescopes—will offer astronomers and citizen scientists an exciting opportunity to catch a glimpse as they fly by.

The first asteroid, designated as 2011MW1, is about to make its closest approach to Earth on 25 July, 2024. The American space agency has revealed that Asteroid 2011 MW1 is not some typical space pebble. It is massive in size when compared to other asteroids which come into Earth's cosmic neighbourhood. This near-Earth object is as big as a skyscraper. The asteroid is hurtling towards our planet at a scary speed of 28,946 km per hour and will be just 2.4 million miles when it makes its close approach, as per data from NASA’s CNEOS.

On the next day, the second asteroid that will fly past Earth on 26 July has been identified as 2011 AM24. As indicated in CNEOS’ database, this asteroid is currently moving at a speed of 22320 kilometres per hour. This potentially hazardous asteroid 2011 AM24 will have a relatively close encounter with us, coming at about 4 million miles from the Earth, 16.7 times the average lunar distance.

The third huge asteroid approaching Earth on 28 July is designated as 2012 OD1. During its approach, it will come as close as 3.5 million kilometres. According to NASA, the asteroid measures between 1640 feet and 3937 feet, that means it could be slightly larger than the world's tallest building structure burj khalifa. It is travelling at a speed of almost 85320 kilometres per hour.

The asteroid which struck the Earth around 66 million years ago, known as the Chiculub impact, is estimated to have been about 10 kilometres (6 miles) in diameter. Scientists have always been concerned about the asteroids racing towards Earth and carrying the potential of wiping out the entire human race.

Such space rocks are remnants left when the solar systems were formed and frequently make a close flyby of Earth, often causing concern to those tracking it. Even though many of them have not been able to become an immediate threat, some have even been deflected due to their alarming proximity and massive size.

When the first one hits, I’m hoping I’m right under it. Now that’s going out with a BANG, not a whimper! No sense worrying about the inevitable. 🇨🇦🖖🏻🇨🇦

Sure would do the earth a favor, it's too overpopulated.

Is this why so many meteors are being spotted?

Some people can really love to spread depressing news eh? Whatever has to happen will do so. 😡

More clickbait garbage. None, least of all NASA had issued any warnings.
