A simple takeaway drill from Peter Barber

Watch renowned coach Peter Barber give John Jennings, a six handicapper, a quick lesson on how he can improve his takeaway and combat the hook shot he is prone to. The simple drill of placing the butt of the club on your belly button is, “as old as the hills,” as Peter says.

After the correct takeaway, do you need to do anything consciously to the top? John

you mentioned that at set up the clubhead starts outside the hands. is this true for all clubs and do you have a video for set up?

Same thing with the driver. in which case you have to go more parellel to the ground

The camera should be on the hitters right side not in the middle!

This doesn’t seem to help me. I still top or hit behind the ball. They always say..without the club going left or right and almost never top it or hit it fat.

The guy was doing a good takeaway until Mr. Generic made him do it wrong. That's a fantastic drill, if done correctly. Watch Nick Faldo's version of this drill.

Ironically this student is NOT turning his body. That is the fatal flaw here that is creating all the havoc with the club.
