In 1942, young Traudl Junge (Alexandra Maria Lara) lands her dream job -- secretary to Adolf Hitler (Bruno Ganz) at the peak of his power. Three years later, Hitler's empire is now his underground bunker. The real-life Traudl narrates Hitler's final days as he rages against imagined betrayers and barks orders to phantom armies, while his mistress, Eva Braun (Juliane Köhler), clucks over his emotional distance, and other infamous Nazis prepare for the end.

The amazing thing is the security apparatus that was based on fear stood until the very end with Germans executing other Germans while the Soviets were only 5 kilometres away.

There were many repugnant aspects of the German High Command. But one that is often overlooked is the absolute disregard for the welfare of its' citizenry at the end. There was no concern for the old men and boys sacrificed to buy them time to escape. There was also no regard for the civilians who would be trapped without food, water, or medicine as the waited for the Russians to sack Berlin.

Last year I was getting rid of dvds that I didn’t need anymore when I was redoing my room and I think that I accidentally got rid of Downfall. I was looking through the ones that I kept and it was unfortunately not in the set. I must of accidentally picked it up with the others. I was so upset and still am, such a great movie. I’ll have to get another one off Amazon at some point.

We forget that the end of WWII in Europe really was the downfall of Germany itself, with the complete extinguishment of the German Govt and all its offices. Japan however managed to remain intact as a state with a functioning govt. The US occupation merely sat atop that power structure and governed Japan through its existing government. In Germany they had to rebuild the state from scratch.
