By the summer of 1941, Hitler had achieved seemingly unstoppable success in his European conquests. He absorbed the Rhineland in 1936, Austria in 1938, and most of Czechoslovakia without resistance.

In 1939, Poland fell within weeks, and the spring of 1940 witnessed the rapid collapse of Norway, Belgium, the Netherlands, and France. German forces had also occupied the Balkans. A vast expanse of Europe, from Spain to the Soviet border, was under Hitler's control.

But, in a dramatic turn of events, he managed to squander his gains and ultimately met his end through suicide in a Berlin bunker.

What were some of the critical errors that led to Hitler's eventual defeat in World War 2?

Let’s find out.

The push toward the south was a good idea. Taking Moscow didn't help Napoleon any more than it would have helped Hitler. The south had vast oil fields, which was what his army desperately needed.

He lost because he was extremely efficient in adding new enemies by declaring wars to most of the world.

Declaring war on the #1 industrial power in the world, which he had no way of directly attacking to impede materiel production, was the guarantee of his defeat.

Hitler Lost due to a multitude of reasons.

1. there wasn’t enough fuel to supply the European axis which consisted of Germany, Italy, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Croatia and partially Finnland. The German synthetic oil combined with the Romanian oil fields couldn’t supply Germanys vast tank armies, Luftwaffe and submarine fleets at the same time, while also supporting the armies and economies of the other axis members.

2. The fronts were overextended. From the ports of Narvik and the ice mountains of northern Finnland, down til the deserts of Libya and from the coasts of Normandy to the ruins of Stalingrad. Way too much ground to fortify against a potential allied landing, as well as partisan activity and the actual frontline itself.

3. The industrial capacity of basically the entire world was against him. The US, UK with all of its colonies and Russia combined dwarfed the German industry, even at the height of its power, before there were armadas of American B17s carpet bombing industrial cities of Germany.

Not wiping out the British at Dunkirk was a war losing mistake. If Hitler had done that it would have been nearly impossible for the allies to start a campaign against Germany on the Western Front. Shifting his bombing campaign from the British airfields to the British cities was a war losing decision. If Hitler had built up his U boat campaign early in the war he could have starved England into surrender. If Hitler had conquered England he could have held the Western Front with so much less effort.

One thing that gives me a chuckle, when Hitler declared war on America, all his Generals cheered. The guy in charge of logistics, took his pistol, and shot himself. He knew at that point, they had lost.

It was a war of production. From the time the Brits declared war Hitler had no hope. It was just a matter of time before the American war machine ended Hitler. Even Stalins boys rode to Berlin on American trucks.

Yes, thank God Hitler didn't listen to his generals. I shudder to think what the world would look like today if he did.

Why are they showing the German occupied area with the old Imperial flag and not the Nazi flag? Seems a bit woke and not accurate

He attacked the Soviet Union. That was the end for him.

Invading the Soviet Union was the correct decision. Mistake #1 was believing it would be over quickly. By the time of the Battle of Smolensk it was clear that simply defeating the armies on the boarder and advancing to Moscow would not win the campaign. Switching objectives to secure industrial and agricultural heartland of Ukraine was again a correct decision. By September 30th it appeared that USSR was on it's last legs. An enormously successful battle of encirclement at Briansk and Orel netted the bulk of the remaining defending forces in front of Moscow. Mistake #2 was believing that the Soviets now had nothing left and were collapsing. The whermact was rushed forward without adequate supplies believing they were pursuing a beaten enemy. The weather turned cold, but even before the freeze really set in, the Germans were exhausted and over extended at the gates of Moscow. USSR managed to scrape together one last force of experienced and well equipped troops from the far East to turn the tide. The germans were pushed back from Moscow in brutal winter fighting. So brutal that the Russians in turn exhausted and overextended themselves.

All these historical what ifs- What If he did the invasion earlier and didnt invade Greece, what if he treated the Ukrainians nicely, what if he went straight from Moscow and not for the South, What if he destroyed the expeditionary force in Dunkirk, what if he won the Battle of Britain...

What if, what if, what if, what if

The bigger and more ambitious the goal - the more chances that you will fail

Hitler's goals were fantasy, not just ambitious

. When you try to take over the world - eventually you're vulnerable to much more mistakes and your chances of losing are greater

Hitler's first man mistake was that he invaded Russia, and his second mistake was that he declared war on the US

Say he went straight to Moscow- well then His flanks would be vulnerable To attacks from the South and could even be cut off and then surrounded... Say they would have occupied Moscow, But then his supply lines would be much more vulnerable because he didn't secure the flanks ...And the train system would be of no use because it would be destroyed before they arrived there

say he wouldn't declare war on the US he would probably still lose to Russia but it would take another few years and another 10 to 15 million dead Russians

When Try to take over the world, you eventually lose

I think, if Hitler had given his navy the 300 U-Boats they wanted, they could have starved Britain into signing somenkind of at least non-beligerant treaty, and then would have been able to fight a war on one front, and perhaps beaten the Soviets. Instead, he fool hardly sank his resources into several Battleships that were quickly sunk, and would have never really enabled him to sink that many commerce ships, or come close to going toe to toe with the British Navy...Should have given Durnits the UBoats he wanted.

Hello there, Yes you are making a lot of great points. I am not arguing with anyone, I'm pointing out the true reason why Hitler lost WW2, Oil, It was all for oil. His other mistakes we're fighting another war in Africa, declaring war on the United States. He also was not keeping in touch with Japan at that time, nor Benito Mussolini as well. If Hitler managed to obtain the oil in the Caucuses he would have forced Stalin to surrender within one year. If Japan had attacked the Eastern side of Russia meaning Siberia, Manchuria Stalin would have been forced to divide his army into two. A crazy fact, If Japan had managed to go north and not attack the United States, they would have had enough oil to supply themselves.

Hitler didnt make mistakes, he was a mistake.

What I mean by this is a lot of what if scenarios are invalid because it always comes down to what if the nazis werent nazis.

Of course if they werent nazis they wouldnt be in that position to begin with, and because they are nazis they can only procede the one way.

the main reason for losing the war was the attack on Poland, because if he wasn't an idiot, he would have turned Poland into a second Spain and eliminated the Soviets together with the Poles in 1939 but he preferred to exterminate the Poles

He lost it the moment he drew Britain into the war. There was no way Germany cold compete with the economic power of the World's largest empire, backed up by the USA. Germany didn't have the economy to hold onto the territory it conquered before it attacked Russia, let alone the vast Russian territories. Add to that no access to the World's oceans due to the Royal Navy blockade and very limited access to oil. Even had they taken the oil fields in the Middle East the oil was not going to get back to Germany in large enough quantities to make a difference.

The war was stupid on Germany's part on every level.

Invading a country that had the biggest army in WW2 has to be one of the worst mistake a General could make

I think a war between Nazi Germany and the USSR was almost inevitable. The huge ideological differences could never be properly bridged, not unless one side was prepared to give up a lot in return and the two most totalitarian states would never do that. However, Hitler precipitated this war at a time when it was not yet an urgent necessity for him. I doubt that Stalin would have attacked Germany as early as 1941, given his naturally cautious nature.
