Could you imagine how many quarters it would take to buy a LEGO set from a coin-operated vending machine? Well that might have happened! LEGO toyed with the idea of selling sets out of vending machines by packaging them in special canisters.

Aside from reusing the mold from the Robo-Rider canister, the canister helps sell Bionicle as an allegory for illness. In the story, when the great spirit Mata-Nui is plagued by the Makuta, pill shaped capsules fall from the sky containing warriors who help destroy the disease that is Makuta and bring Mata Nui to his full health

Another reason behind the design of the Bionicle canisters is due to the lead art director, Christian Fabre's personal battle with cancer. Much of the Bionicle universe was symbolic of his battle. The canisters with TOA heroes inside represented the pills he took to fight the disease.

And before Robo-Riders, ThrowBots also came in a capsule type case in mid-to-late 1997/early 1998, depending on your region.

It also fit an entire built Bionicle, if you removed the weapons or positioned them right. As a "buildable and swappable action figure" it makes sense to provide a way to store built models safely.

I saw a video from one of the Bionicle creators and he showed that there were some Bionicle cans that had a mini CD in them. The circumference of a can is a little bit bigger then the one from a mini CD so that they can fit inside of the lid. Clever engineering on their part. The video was from him going into a Lego store to get the new 2023 brick build Tahu and Takua Bionicle that you get as a extra when you buy something over 20€ I think

Got one of these for Christmas when I was about 8. Remembered it ever since. So idea why this Lego is such a big memory of mine considering I only had 1, built it, and kept that packaging for YEARS
