Introductory Statistics: What Is A Parameter? (Includes Examples of Parameters and Populations)

A parameter is a number that describes the population, the largest group of "individuals" that we are interested in making inferences on. ("individuals" = "observational units") Because a parameter describes the result of measuring every individual in a large group, it is hard to determine precisely.

The video also provides examples of parameters and the corresponding concept of a "population".
00:00 Introduction
01:06 # of red cars in USA (a parameter)
02:05 parameters are usually unknown
03:32 Examples of parameters (and the populations they correspond to)

Note: I should have said in the video that the population is "the LARGEST group of individuals we are interested in".......The sample is also "a group of individuals we are interested in," but it is a small measurable group. Numbers that describe the sample are called "statistics", and are much easier to know than parameters.

Note: A parameter could also describe something like the true effect of a drug on an individual...and still is hard to know! But because of different reasons than...Generally, parameters represent the truth. The truth is hard to know!

I read a statistics book and it mentions that parameters are the actual numbers not the measure.
