Chappell Roan and the Destruction of Fame

Chappell Roan is one of the biggest / fastest rising stars in the world, but there's some kind of disconnect between her celebrity status and her portrayal in the media. Looking at her personality in front of the camera, through the lens of Erving Goffman and "The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life", I'm giving my ~opinions~ on her, her """controversies""", and the public reaction to them.

I completely respect her stance regarding privacy, she is a normal person I don't know why people think it's a crazy thing to ask to be left alone in public

one of my favourite songs of all time, Paparazzi by Lady Gaga, is the only song I can think about when I think of Chappel Roan rn. I love Chappel's music so much, like I would give anything to see her live, but everyone online seems so entitled to her, they want to be in her life, to control her life, it feels like a whole "we want politically active pop stars" and then one that is truly political, fighting for better candidates is getting shit for it. "We love prioritising mental health" but oh no you can't do it now you're a pop star you don't get that luxury.

The reason I brought up Gaga's Paparazzi is because it speaks to how entitled people feel to pop stars (coming from one herself) and it also really highlights how dangerous and scary this is. Just because you listen to their music (which what gives like less than 1 cent) doesn't mean you can do whatever you want. "I'm your biggest fan, I'll follow you until you love me"

PS: This kind of out of nowhere fame and public scrutiny can literally kill people, and it has happened too many times. Leave Chappel Roan alone!

No actual person has a problem with the way she is acting. I have never heard her sing but like her as a person for how she is acting.

Nothing went wrong. It's just that Chappell is trying to shine a light on how fame can affect someone and the frightening things about it, but entitled fans obviously don't wanna hear about none of that because they feel like they own Roan as a consumer.

As far as the endorsement controversy, I never, EVER look to celebrities on what to do in regards to politics because I am of my own mind. I'm not a sheep who moves wherever a fave moves. Chappell ain't even say anything truly horrendous anyways. All she said was that she was indeed voting for Kamala, but she wasn't endorsing because, in her mind, there are some character questions involved not just with Kamala Harris, but the Democratic Party as a whole. It's okay to feel like that because I feel that we as Americans should be able to criticize politicians, even and sometimes ESPECIALLY the ones that we support and vote for.

I feel like a culmination of one of the biggest pop stars in the world essentially overnight, backlash over the aforementioned controversies, burn in the All Things Go cancellation.

Who has actually been getting mad at her for this? Preteens? Grow up.

Why do people feel sorry for rich and famous people it’s honestly ridiculous

People going "oh no chappell roan you're rich and famous" to act like she is being unreasonable for wanting privacy and people going "oh no the artist you bought tickets for cancelled and instead you 'had' to see all these other talented artists" to act like the fans who paid to see her are being unreasonable have the same energy just on a different side and I don't agree with either

as a Kaleigh who has just about never seen one of us get famous, I have nothing but support for this fellow Kayleigh (and also, of course, the fact that she's pretty awesome.)

choosing a carrer that turns you into a public person comes with pros and cons. Can`t have one without the other.

It honestly feels like people want celebrities to act like real people until they actually show real emotions.

I really wish you had named this "Chappell Roan and the DECONSTRUCTION of Fame." Because I saw the title and thought "Is this another person going to say that this young lady needs "media training" as if it's somehow her fault that her fans and people too online in their politics keep acting like unhinged iNCELS about her?" I know Chappell Roan's music because of YouTube Shorts, Reels and TikToks. For the entire spring and summer she was everyone's lip sync, dance or background music videos. I knew of Hot to Go because I've been a fan of "music destined to be cheerleader routines" since Hey Mickey. I'm glad I was wrong because you put a voice to this issue that I've been feeling about it since she told her fans to stop being creepy stalkers. (I just don't get that. Why are you harassing artist's family members?) I'm seeing more and more people coming to a mature defense of Chappell Roan and I hope she see's it to. If young people had any flaw I'd say they concentrate too much on negative people and haters. If your fans out number your haters F^^^ the bloody haters. Seriously.

Similar thing happened to Sleep Token, one of the biggest metal bands atm. They prefer to stay anonymous as part of their art, but some "fans" felt entitled to know who they are and tried to doxx them.

I can relate to every aspect of her personality. I quit music when the fame became too much, so yes, she is a champion and I root for her. Also, sexism. You know it.

Appreciate this take so much, working on a video about her political stance and will definitely be referencing this video

I really want to root for her. She’s great. Even managed to see her live during her spring tour. But I don’t want her to burn herself out because of the fame microscope being so huge.
I even brought up the endorsement drama to a family member when we were talking about politics and he made this as a point, you don’t really need a public figure to tell you what to do or who to vote for. Yes, you look up to this person, but you don’t have to be a blind loyalist to every single thing they do.

And yes, the famous person deserves privacy. It feels icky wanting to know their phone number, their shoe size or what they eat for breakfast. Leave them be. As Alfo mentioned, Britney, Demi, etc., fame nearly put them in the grave. Don’t add another one to the list. I saw a comparison post not long ago where she's in the same dark red shirt in that endorsing Kamala discussion video and she was so happy in the first, and then was put through the wringer in the other. I don't want her or people I enjoy to be like that. I want you at your best, and if wanting privacy is what you want, so be it. Anything to get you at your best. Let her live gracefully. Leave Chappell alone. Haven't we done enough?

I just wanted to say before even starting this video I can’t believe this is the first I’ve seen your face! The man that got me into Modern Baseball, a true legend and hero 🎉

Even with everything presented here, it doesn’t change the fact that she’s pretentious. No normal person cares about her political opinion

I know you mentioned burnout in the last video and everything, but as a longtime fan I am stoked you are still churning stuff out. Be well brotha

I love your take on this. I don’t personally listen to her music but I’ve felt awful seeing how creators talk about her. Someone commented about it too, that other creators say she needs media training. No she doesn’t. I’ve seen the videos and she’s exasperated by how people don’t seem to understand. She just wants understanding. And I can guarantee that if asked those same people would want the same thing. Bc who wouldn’t?
