One of my favorite things in the world is Melissa Villasenor saying "Aw, man."

Tip from a self defense class I took: don't "wolverine claw" your keys, you are actually more likely to be injured that way than you are to do and damage to an attacker. If your assailant gets a hold of your fist all they have to do is squeeze and your hand is in pain and you've probably lost your keys. Plus it didn't give you any leverage, and leverage is key if you find yourself pitted against someone with a height/weight/muscle advantage.

Instead: hold a single key in your hand like you would to unlock your door. If accosted, jab the key toward vulnerable areas (eyes, throat, etc.) and kick at the knees. Try to incapacitate and get away fast.

Bonus: since you're already holding your keys the normal way they're ready to unlock your door and you don't need to fumble for the right key.

Boys laugh about what they put girls through, but they won't be laughing when they're wiping tears off their daughter's face for the same reason~Will Smith

I remember hearing a guy speak that was a personal security expert. He talked about the potential threats to personal safety, and how it was different for men and women. He once decided to do a survey, and asked a lot of people about the last time they felt in fear for their lives. Men, unless they were emergency responders, often had to think back to their experiences in the military. Women, on the other hand, often could cite much more recent examples. "Last night, when I worked late, and had to walk through a dark parking garage to get to my car." "Last week, I looked out the window, and thought I saw a guy looking up from the corner outside. He looked just like the one that asked me for a date and couldn't accept No for an answer." I can't remember the rest of the examples, but the point was pretty well made that women live with the potential threat of violence on a regular basis.

A few years ago I had a very eye-opening conversation with a woman who basically went over all these 'rules' and how different her life was as a woman from mine as a man. I never realized how much of a luxury it was to be able to walk around at night without fear.

Thank you SNL for this chipper, upbeat and utterly sobering peek behind the curtain.

“Not all men” is true but “too many men” is also very true!

When one of them said “I go like this so he’ll think ‘she’s not worth the trouble’” that hurt. it had never really struck me the absurd situations women have to put themselves through in order to avoid harassment. Welcome to hell, indeed.

I remember sitting with a big group of 20-something's in college, guys and girls, just chatting. Guys started telling their worst date ever stories, and they were all funny or embarrassing or lame. The girls got really honest and we all started swapping our worst date stories, where we were sexually assaulted, harassed, and in fear of our lives. It was sad to me how all of the guys were shocked and appalled.

Welcome to hell, dudes.

"My dad gave me a pink gun, so... there's a lot there" is an incredible line. This skit was too good for SNL

Some men think these events are “ “extremely rare” but I have more than two friends who have experienced a form of harassment; I’m 12

A lot of the women I have ever had any personal conversations with have told me at least one story about how they were followed home, and/or stalked, and/or abused, and/or raped, at least once.
It didn't matter their age, level of attractiveness, appearance, race, or anything.
It has to stop.

In kindergarten I remember a man telling me he watched me get dressed every morning. I wish I told someone instead of taking it as a compliment

when i was thirteen years old, a man told me i had beautiful eyes, and when i didn't respond, he got annoyed and said, "what, not even a thank you?". my cousin told him he was being inappropriate and the two of us left, but when we met up with her mom later, she said that next time, my cousin shouldn't have said that because he could have gotten violent.

i told this story years later to a group of my friends. one of my male friends commented on the fact that i must be misremembering the age because 13 is way too young for something like that to happen. he also took issue with the "next time" comment because "how could she possibly know it was going to happen again?"

men really do see the world differently, huh?

A friend was drunk. He didn’t do anything, but he overpowered me in a “joking” scuffle and took things too far. That made me realize that the men around me aren’t “safe”.
I had a very sobering moment with someone I trusted.
