Queer Pop Star Chappell Roan Sparks Outrage for Not Endorsing Kamala Harris

Taylor Swift might’ve endorsed Kamala Harris, but Chappell Roan said she has no plans to do the same in an interview with The Guardian. Chappell Roan cited many “issues” she had with the government and said there are “problems on both sides” of the political aisle. Her comment sparked outrage on Twitter from liberals who assumed she was tacitly endorsing Trump and didn’t actually care about LGBTQ+ rights as much as she says she does. The problem, however, is that the people upset with Chappell Roan aren’t actually getting the full story.

I'm sorry, but I couldn't imagine getting my political values from a pop star singer lol. I get that it's important for celebrities to take a stance, but the sheer number of people being influenced by these superstars is just as concerning as her not taking a stand. The fact that Taylor Swift got hundreds of thousands of people to register to vote is great... until you realize that they weren't even registered after all the absolute shit going on until that moment. Mind-boggling how many people are just drones drifting through life.

Like with Hilary Clinton in 2016, I’m not voting FOR Kamala Harris. I’m voting AGAINST Trump.

Chappell isn't wrong, both sides have their problems. But, only one side will make life much more difficult for the queer community that supporters her, the queer community she herself is a part of, and the drag community that inspired her aesthetic in the first place.

Additionally, as Jane Fonda beautifully put it the other day, if we don't put our criticisms aside and elect Harris/Walz, the alternative is fascism on our own soil. Only one side will actually allow us to organize and put pressure on the administration to make progress possible. Again, she is not wrong for calling out the Democrats, but her viewpoint is myopic at best and irresponsible at worst.

I sure wish I had the $ to shield my family and friends from the worst aspects of a Trump admin.

It's black and gray. One side is much worse than the other.

Both sides BS. It is ok to criticize Dems, but holy crap, we're talking about fixable issues, a side that can be changed Vs. the Rightwing which is just pure evil crazy hate on full display. I'm pissed at Biden for Palestine and not satisfied with trans rights support on the left, but I'm still going to promote Kamala and vote for her because one battle at a time! The 1st most important battle to start with is beating back fascism!!

It’s simple. She should clearly say that her endorsement is contingent upon Kamala taking a stance on Palestine.

Also just because she doesn’t “feel the need” to ENDORSE Kamala, doesn’t mean she wouldn’t vote for her over Trump.

Voting Democrat isn’t an endorsement of everything they do.

Voting Democrat is like putting on your own oxygen mask before trying to assist others with theirs. If you can’t breathe you can’t help their situation either.

While her position is nuanced and I agree with it, her statement was not. Her statement does put both sides on the same level and saying it in that manner was bad.

Yeah, she doesn't owe anyone an endorsement. And people shouldn't hold that against her.
AND lets be real for a second on the Venn diagram of Chapell Roan fans and people who will vote for Trump, the circles probabaly dont overlap very much anyway, so who would her endorsement actually sway.

Celebrities shouldn’t have to endorse if they don’t want to. I think we rely on them too much as a society, and we don’t need to look to them for political knowledge. I do think if her number one is trans rights, she knows that there’s an obvious difference but I completely understand it that she wouldn’t because of Gaza. I admire her activism and advocacy on that front.

That being said, she should also expect criticism from people if she says her biggest issue is trans rights and yet manages to make a both sides statement anyway.

You can’t expect people to not take issue with what you say if your biggest issue is trans rights and not make it abundantly clear what the difference is. If she just kept it at Israel/Gaza, I’d agree. Both parties are legitimately awful on this issue and as much pressure needs to be put on them as possible.

I also understand that she’s probably trying to please both her leftist fan base and her republican family members. So that’s probably where that is coming from. Also she rose to fame practically overnight and she doesn’t know how to handle it, and she’s dealing with crazy fans and pestering media.

Also I really like her music so that helps

This community seems to have an issue with making Israel/Gaza the only thing that matters. I agree that it’s top 3, probably even top 2 or #1. But there are also LGBTQ rights to bear in mind. And labor rights. Reproductive rights. The courts. Democratic norms. Climate change.

Harris should come out harder on Israel, absolutely. But she’s infinitely better than Trump on about five or six other incredibly important areas of policy. If enough people don’t vote for Harris because of Israel and trump wins, then trump will be worse on Israel AND all these other important policies.

And normally I’d agree that Harris has an obligation to earn your vote. But trump is so openly and brazenly worse than Harris that he should provide all the capital necessary for folks to come out and support Harris. It’s unfortunately just that simple sometimes.

This has been the reality of blk people in America forever. We will never get all that we want out of a politician, but we vote for harm reduction. I didn't want Biden, I wanted Burnie. I voted for biden because he wasn't trump. I view my vote as one of survival, I don't have the luxury to both sides the issues. She is well within her right to endorse or not endorse whoever she wants. It's up to each voter to decide for themselves.

Should we rely on musicians for their political opinions? Obviously not. With that said, as a trans person in conservatives' gunsights I can't help but to be less than enthusiastic about her donating to charity while drawing false equivalences between milquetoast liberals and people who literally want to take away my healthcare and force me into dangerous and humiliating situations. This is a case where you really need to be explicit, because a lot of us are facing existential threats from the Republican party as it stands today.

Voting is not an endorsement of morality. Saying "Vote for Kamala because Trump is worse" is not endorsing the morality of Kamala's positions.

If people saw voting as a simple decision based on hard reality and not some moral exercise or virtue signal, things would be so much better.

Btw, this is as much aimed at Liberals as it is at "both sides bad" types.

I think we all have to be honest. Whenever we are lefties do not vote, its a win for Donald Trump. We vote for the least worst party. That’s it.

My main problem is that saying both sides are the same just spreads voter apathy and the left already has a voter apathy problem that doesn't need to be encouraged by a leftist celebrity.

She's correct, and she did say people should vote. She isn't obligated to give her endorsement.
