Two Must Know Knots for Sportboat Fishing

In the Southern California Bight, Sportboat fishing is a prominent source for anglers to get on the water. Over the last several years Bluefin Tuna has been a prime target for the anglers in this region.  While techniques and approaches vary greatly, there are two knots that you should know when going fishing on a sportboat.

The first knot is the uni-to-uni knot. The scenario and necessity for this knot are a common occurrence on a sportboat. For instance, say while fighting a fish you get in a tangle and get sawed off by someone else’s line and you are left missing 1/3 of your braid on your reel.  Most sportboats will carry spare braid spools and by using a uni-to-uni knot you’ll be able to re-splice the line that was lost quickly and efficiently.

The next knot is the RP knot, which in my opinion is the most important knot to learn to tie quickly.  This knot should be used as your fluorocarbon to braid connection and fluorocarbon should be the connection point for all lures and hooks.
