I remember hearing an interview with Tom Brevoort where he said Bendis didn't want to make this an event, it was just meant to be part of his New Avengers run. Brevoort agreed to this, but when Bendis pitched the story at a retreat, everyone got excited about the idea and Brevoort threw Bendis under the bus, making it an event.

Some events are better read as a culmination of a run on another book (or part of a run), and this is one of them

Beautiful summary of that decade: “when Marvel went from being a comic book publisher to a company that published comic book properties”.
After Siege they really should have stopped releasing large annual events for at least few years.

I have a soft spot for this event, since it was being published in México just right when I was getting into comics. I'm talking more than 12 years ago, since I was in elementary school.
My father knew a place, near a bus station, where all the surplus material from Editorial Televisa went, and every week he would bring me a lot of the comics they had, specially the ones from this event. I think the only two tie-ins I still don't have is the Ms Marvel and Captain Britain ones, aside for the ones they didn't even translate.
The place he knew later fell off, once SMASH started publishing the Marvel catalog, and now they only have some old and in bad state magazines.
Great summary and critique of the event, tho.

Fascinating, I never heard of the parallels between this event and Battlestar Galactica, but they are uncanny. Thanks for posting, I love these event recap videos!

I know that this event sucked but I remember it fondly because for some strange reason, when it was published in my country they also published all the tie ins, and not only the main mini series. I ate all that up when I was a kid lol

I hope you plan on doing something similar for DC's events.
With James Gunn's recent announcements, might be good to recap?I
I've enjoyed your Marvel event vids even though I am very much more a DC fan.

Excellent analysis! This event video series gets better as the whole picture continues to be revealed. Thank you for making it.

Although it was an intriguing premise, the execution failed for the most part, in my honest opinion (and for some of the reasons you cite). As much as Norman Osborn gaining power seemed ludicrous, having him as President (as Luthor would be in the DCU) was fun to read for a while, and his leading the Thunderbolts team, written by Ellis.

First time i saw this event being marketed, i thought it might be a metaphor for US feelings about terrorism following the 9/11 attacks...

Secret Invasion did have two excellent tie-ins, each of which did a better job of certain aspects of the story than the main series. Hercules' tie-in saw him fight the Skrull Gods, and go into much more depth about the religious side of things. The Initiative had a true infiltrationn going on in secret, unlike the main series where the Skrulls are openly storming New York in issue 1. Both together are much better than the strung out mess of the main series, IMO.

Great video! I still think events have been disingenuous cash grabs ever since The Infinity Gauntlet in the mid 90s.

Well, in the end, we can just watch the EMH show adaptation of Secret Invasion...
Because that one was... You know... Actually good...

Only thing i liked about this event was that excellent Black Panther 1-shot “see wakanda and die”, and the fact that it brought back 3D Man (in avengers initiative)

Hated this event when I was a kid and although it didn’t really make sense for Osborn to take over, Dark Reign into Siege is easily one of my favourite storylines in the Modern Marvel landscape. Between Thunderbolts and Dark Avengers, Thor rebuilding Asgard, the X-Men establishing Utopia. I absolutely adored that period of Marvel.

Thank you. I never read this event, but I have a question about it that the video doesn't answer. In the late '90s, I bought several issues of one of the X-books (the ones drawn by Alan Davis). During that run, the X-Men wound up on the Skrull homeworld just before Galactus arrived. The team encountered Skrulls who had been transformed into doppelgangers of countless super-heroes who would be used against Earth. Was this referred to in any way during any of the SI books? I've always been curious about that. Thanks again for another informative analysis.
