How to Sync Audio & Video

Good sounding audio is important, and cameras internal mics, and internal mic press are pretty garbage. Recording separately can help with this. So here's how you clap sync audio that is recorded separately from your video.

Also. When I record voice over or audiobooks, I use 3 finger clicks to show when I flubbed and did a retake. Makes it easy to so where my retake starts.

I don't use claps because my favorite editor has automatic sync by waveform. If for some reason it does not work, I let the sound from different tracks into different stereo channels, this makes it easier to synchronize them manually. In any case, this only works if the recording speed is stable. I had one ridiculously cheap Chinese action cam that was impossible to sync due to unstable recording speed.

Yes I have always done this, I got the idea from TV and Movie films where they snap that shutter thing on screan infront of every take for the same reasons.

Something to add, when you do the clap, make sure the camera can see it. Sometimes you find that audio and video will be out of sync on the camera, so even though you synced your mic to the camera audio, it may still be out of sync. Use the visual claps as a single point of reference.

Or better yet, buy a cheap clapperboard/slate. I picked one up from the party section of my local K-Mart, and while it obviously isn't professional, it will get the job done, and be better to work with than a hand clap.

Cameras didn't always record audio. Using a clapper provided a distinct visual event that corresponds to the audio.
