I was on Zakynthos island. It can be reached by boat from Patra. Nice place. They make the best patsa soup. When Germans invaded the island, they requested a list of the Jews on the island. Next morning they received the list. It has two names - the name of the governor and the bishop, both of them being Greeks.
In the early fifties an earthquake followed by fire struck the island. The damage and loss of human lives were devastating. The island immediately received a humanitarian aid. On the boxes with the aid there were stars of David and the message: We remember.

BTW the Greek Archbishop at the time protested the imprisonment and treatment of the Jews, but the Zakynthos story is next level. The 275 Jews of the island were spared in the begining because the governor of the island refused to fulfil the deportation orders. But 2 years later axis forces came to the island and asked the mayor to make a list so that they can round up the Jews. The mayor went to the mitropolit at the time for advice, so they gave a list of names, 2 names, just theirs. And they said "if you want to take our Jews, we are going with them" . The general got pissed and sacked the island, specifically the Jewish houses, but found nobody. That was because the mayor and the mitropolit had warned the Jews and they went into hiding at the remote vilages of the island, hidden by locals. Then the n gave up and left.

I'm not only a Greek Orthodox American but, Zakinthian as well. My oldest friend from elementary school was a girl whose family were Greek Jews from Athens. I have seen the Zakinthian temple also

My mum's family (Cherezli) returned to Jerusalem from a Greek island, over 200 years ago. Really interesting to see this video :-)

Just some perspective from someone from a small country. The municipality where I live is around 70.000 inhabitants, the whole country a bit over 5 million. Blows my mind to think that the Holocaust would be like eliminating my whole country, EVERYBODY, every single person.

Greeks and Jews are 2 of the most if not the most ancient ethnicities, both with rich history and culture.

Thank you for your stories from afar! I love travel, I've never been to Greece (it's on the bucket list), and you've put a new pin on my map. And, in particular, I am ever grateful for a tiny dose of hope in a world that seems more broken & bizarre every day.😐

Oh man, this is a special type of content creation, Tal. Exploring Jewish history all over the world as a Mizrahi Jew. You're awesome. Keep it up.

Also, dear Greece: find more ways to cultivate the Jewish population in your country! Jews bring innovation and economic prosperity ^_^. Rebuild what was lost in the past, and Greece might prosperity like never before ^_^

Interesting. Apparently, the “Mizrachi” side of my family was once part of the Ladino-speaking Sephardic community in Thessaloniki (expelled from Eastern Spain), but somehow made their way to Baghdad, and eventually London. 🇬🇷⛵️🐪🇮🇶✈️🇬🇧
