I spent three weeks this summer at the peak of tourism and generally if you're a budget traveller Greece is absolutely doable with a low budget. Also, public transportation is great and reliable. For instance, in Santorini instead of using Taxis one can just use the public bus which only costs 2 €. This was the case in practically every island. Even on the mainland, public buses are fairly cheap. If you don't want to eat extremely expensive just eat a gyros or souvlaki for about 3.50€ (usually that's already enough to fill you up). If you go on lesser known parts of Greece a hostel might just cost you 10€ a night (even in Meteora!). In any way, if you go to Greece you will have an amazing time.

We visited Crete in May, and it was not only much less crowded but the weather was already feeling like middle of the summer 😄

You miss the real Greece when you go to Mykonos and Santorini. Greece has 6000 kilometers of beaches, lovely mountain villages, gorges, clear and easy kayaking rivers, skiing slopes, traditional bridges and so much more that you cannot ignore. One day's stay in Santorini is equal to the tour of the Peloponnese for 3 days, (Ancient Olympia, Epidaurus, Mycenae, Nafplio, Monemvasia, Mani, Polylymnio, Voidokoilia beach, Methoni and and and). A visit to Epirus (with rivers, mountains, gorges, beaches, villages, bridges, waterfalls and much more) you will never forget! The same with Western Macedonia, Halkidiki, Mount Athos. Pelion in Thessaly and central Greece with its high mountains, which are an hour away from the sea. And if you insist on the islands...then look for Ithaca, Kythera, Skopelos, Sifnos, Chios, Symi, Thassos, Amorgos and...

I have never been to Greece before but I am thinking in 2023 I will have to go. I have always been worried about the crowds but the sights, islands, ocean, landscape, seafood, culture, and history might make me change my mind.

It is expensive if you go to the touristic hotspots indeed but prices vary hugely from island to island and on the mainland too. We visited two Cyclades islands in July this year and spent no more than 35 euros a day for a rental car, and no more than 60 euros a night for accommodation. The islands were not crowded, not feeling like you were trapped in a souvenir shop and insanely beautiful. As for the food and people, the further away you go from tourist spots, the better they are. We go to Greece once or twice a year and it is for me by far the best destination ever but now avoid the very well known places. There's so much more to discover.

I agree on most of your recommendations. Just to let you know all the businesses accept cards in Greece. Also, you can travel in May or September even to Mykonos and Santorini when the weather is great and get a car for 35 euro and eat nicely with 15euro per person. Air Travel between the islands is not the best but if you avoid the main islands there are airlines that do island hoping from Crete to Karpathos then to Kasos or Samos etc. Also Greece is a shopping destination, but mostly in the mainland. In Mykonos or Santorini you will spend a lot, those are shops for rich people, but if you shop in Athens Airport or even outside of the airport where a mall and an outlet are located you can get great deals. I hope you enjoyed Greece this year.

I think you can rely on busses and other public transport in Greece, BUT you need to be super cool and casual and not worry too much about timings. I used busses all over the Greek mainland and the islands and yes, they are always late, or arrive whenever they want to, but they are great and very very cheap.

Actually I don't really agree that greece is expensive, of course apart for Santorini and Mykonos, but other than that I have been in different places around Greece and it's a lot cheaper than most of europe

Great travel trips Christian! I would recommend May or June even until 15 July is the best time for Greek summer. Good prices, not crowded, perfect weather.

We spent 3 weeks in Kefalonia and had 5G all across the island. Never dropped below 100mb/s and unlimited data for about 20€. Digital nomad paradise!

As a Greek I can say that:
1. Crete is definately not a part of the Cyclades.
2. There's no rule for tipping, it's not a must, but it's kind of an unwritten rule. Waiters, bartenders etc work long hours for almost minimal wage in most islands (not talking about expensive places in Mykonos and Santorini), so tips help them a lot.
3. Shopping clothes etc can be very cheap, unless you go on Mykonos' expensive shops.
4. 9:02 this beach is one of the most Instagram famous places in the country, strange that it isn't well known for international travellers.
5. I think almost every bussiness/shop accepts card payments now.

I agree about everything else though, good takes. I'd also mention that most people in touristy places know at least some words in English, in contrast to other EU countries like France or Spain, where people don't know or don't want to speak English.
Also, Ionian Islands (Kefalonia, Zakinthos, Kerkira, Lefkada, Ithaki etc) are very beautiful and cheaper than most Cyclades in general. You should definately visit them. :)

Planning on spending 3-4 weeks in Greece with my husband and 2.5 year old daughter. Even though this was not family centered, this was super helpful to know and great reminders about booking early and the international license!

Half way through the video. 😁 Cyclades is read Kee-kla-des.
Also tipping is expected in Greece. Just not standard 10% like in the US. 5% is good. More later if so.
