How to Install or Upgrade your Trolling Motor Plug and Receptacle on Your Boat!

Some specs on this model:

- 70A continuous rating
- Universal design for 2 or 3-wire configuration 12V, 24V, 12/24V, 24/36V, 36V or 48V systems
- Corrosion resistant, plated brass electrical components
- Receptacle contains watertight sealing cap and the plug contains Integrated strain relief and keyed design with thumbprint locator
- Accepts up to 6 AWG wire

Not only is this the correct and safe solution to my install, but I also REALLY like how this plug fits in to the receptable vs my old twist lock version that was a pain to line up sometimes (think night time - mosquitoes buzzing). This is just 3 pressure prongs that plug in straight and snug and that's the end of it. Heck, I would say this is a GREAT upgrade even if I didn't need the more robust power handling.

For your own reference, here is the full list of trolling motors and power requirements from Minn Kota:

So glad I changed my trolling motor plug, I really did hate that twist lock version. Anyone else do this on their boat?

Just installed this bad boy. Sure is a great replacement for the factory POS that comes with boats. To further prevent corrosion, I added a drop of marine silicone in that hole where the pos/neg wires split (coming out of the plug to the trolling motor) to prevent any water from entering the plug there, fresh or salt.

I'm up grading my trolling motor from a 12 volt Minn Kota power drive v2 to a 24 volt Minn Kota Ultrex . With the help of your videos I should have no problem rewiring my trolling motor. Thanks for making such informative videos.

I just changed mine today, thanks to your great tutorial Dan.
Ordered the same plug. It was an easy install in my Crestliner. I only had to widen up the hole where the old twist lock adapter was. That plug is solid!

Got a big project this weekend to do my boat. I'm replacing the stock edge 45 (45lbs thrust) for a 12v terrova (55lbs thrust) with ipilot link. I'm gonna replace the stock 8gauge wires for 6gauge and upgrade the 50amp breaker for a 60amp. This video will for sure help me when installing the plug and receptacle. Thanks!

Just wanted to say thanks. I upgraded my trolling motor to a 24 volt minn kota. I thought initially I only had to add a battery. Man was I wrong. I've watched most of your videos. Couldn't have done it right without you.

Hey Dan,
I Just did this upgrade on my Princecraft, was having problems with my old twist one and decided buy and install this one after seeing your video.
I'm only running 12V but plan on eventually upgrading in the future, which this Heavy Duty plug will have no problems handling.
Thanks man
Keep the great videos coming.

Great video. Had to replace the standard plug on my new motor within 3 months of owning it. Agree, the twist plug is not the best method. Went with the old plug because I didn’t know better. Will do this upgrade when the next replacement comes.

I watched your video on how to wire up a trolling motor and made a comment about upgrading from Marinco plug and receptacle. Your comment was to watch the video where are you upgraded your plug-in receptacles I assume that is this video. I too hated my Marinco plug and receptacle but I installed the Minnkota MKR-26. When pulling my old Marenco apart my red wire fell off as well just like yours. Certainly your new Marinco is a much better plug Then the old Marinco. Have you taken a look at the MKR-26. I liked it so much I’ve upgraded my small Boat and my big boat. Anyway thanks for the videos
