How Did Imperial Japan Originally Plan On Invading The Soviet Union In WW2?

Why Didn't The Japanese Invade The Soviet Union In WW2? ⬇️

The Pacific Ocean Theater saw some of the most brutal fighting of the entire war; pitting the allies against the forces of the Empire of Japan. However, Japan's expansion into the Pacific was not their original plan. In the 1920s and '30s, many in the Japanese Imperial Army saw the military doctrine of Hokushin-ron as the best way to serve Imperial Japan's interests. This doctrine would have involved expanding northwards, through Manchuria, Mongolia before finally seizing the sparsely populated, but resource-rich plains of Siberia. For reasons we explored in-depth in this video, Japan never went through with this plan and saw minimal fighting with the Soviet Union until the end of World War Two. Instead, the Empire of Japan turned its attention to the Pacific, bringing it into conflict with the forces of America and the British Empire.

Those plans were swiftly cancelled after the Battle of Nomonhan in 1939 in which the Soviets quickly crushed the Japanese with their tanks.

Zhukov was a big reason for Japan losing in 1938. When his command switched to Germany, Japan could have had a chance now that the commander was focused on a superior land army in Europe and Japan fighting a lesser commander but who knows

The Japanese military was an organizational mess during the war. I'm with Yamamoto on this one, why the hell would the Axis pick a fight with both the US and the USSR?

Also fun fact:

I did a question for university where I explored what could have happened if they went through with Hokushin-Ron.

It doesn’t go well for Japan 😅

This plan is on Wikipedia and it’s like the only map you can find on Hokushin-Ron 🤣

Thanks for not giving any details of the actual plan, i.e how they were intending to do it.

With all due respect "Almost" is a big overstatement

Even the thought of the Japanese invading Russia is hilarious

Japan feeling left out in the war so took the US by surprise.

It would have been way harder to extract resources, building infrastructure from scratch in Siberia versus going into the Pacific.

Now this is a scenario to play in HoI4.

To be fair if Japan had succeeded in conquering Southern Asia they could just come back and take Siberia in a pinch

And now Japan is loved by everybody

And Germany not so much

Japan should have went through with the plan, but not until the Germans invaded Russia. They should have worked together on an invasion of the Soviet Union, and if they had, the war would probably have turned out much differently

Title should've been:
Why didn't an ant attacked the mighty lion.

This is not an insult to Japan. This is simply a declaration that there is a clear pattern in history showing that it is never wise to try and attack Russia.

Japan suffered defeat against the Soviet & Mongolian forces in the Border Conflicts.. So Japan came to the conclusion that an invasion into Soviet territory would be costly.
