The version I always knew of was Sisyphus had ratted Zeus out for trying to get away with a nymph to her a father, a river god in exchange for a fresh spring water fountain in his kingdom. The river god then tried to attack Zeus and Zeus ended turning his daughter into an island to "save her" and Zeus got mad at Sisyphus and ordered Hades to kill him. Hades agreed to do it personally and he's the one who ended up getting channed up and the other gods threatened to make his life miserable that he'd wish he was dead if he didn't let Hades go. So he did and, but in anticipation for being sent to the underworld, he told his wife to give him a pauper's funeral including no coin under his toung to cross the river Styx. Hades was shocked was by this that he sent him back to the land of the living to correct his wife and so he was able to live out his life happily until he died of old age and that's when he was punished with the boulder

According to what the gods has punished him to do, it sounded like he was in the fourth circle of Hell, the circle of Greed, but instead of a stone, they would roll a big large bag of coin over a hill, back down, and then do it again.

Missing a lot of key parts. He told his wife to postpone the funeral rites & not burn his body. He then used this as an excuse that his wife was disrespecting his body. He pled with Hades to allow him to go & convince her to perform the rituals & then he would return. He then was dragged back to the underworld when he refused to keep his end of the bargain.
