Louis I have also witnessed HP laser printers that basically will self-disable themselves within a day or two if you don't "register" them with HP. Nowhere do they tell anyone this either. So someone can take it out of the package, install the driver, and it works. Then a day later its throwing a flag and wont print because the bloatware didnt signal that it was registered. HP is absolutely disgusting on these kinds of issues.

I've done this before so I can confirm that you can go back to old firmware by factory resetting the printer. It is kind of a process and you do have to search for it, but it is possible.

I just picked up an HP laserjet 1320tn from an estate sale for $8. Works perfect after I took it home and put paper in it. According to the self-diag print, the thing was made in 2004, printed 142k pages, and has had 87 jams total. On the print out, it says that a non-HP print cartridge is installed, with a note below stating "A non Hewlett-Packard supply has been installed. HP supports customer choice". Oh how the times have changed..

Recently, I had an Internet outage for three days. During that time, a message appeared on my printer, saying “unless you connect to the Internet, you will not be able to print soon“

I really didn’t appreciate being threatened by my printer to connect to the Internet. I should be able to print via USB or even direct connect as much as I want regardless of Internet connection.

At this point they should be honest and just sell you a subscription for printing, where the device is loaned and they don't even pretend that you own it.

Epson did this to me too. I was using generic ink for a while. I did a software update and then all of a sudden my ink cartridges all had errors.

Before connecting to the internet after you turn on the printer you can set the printer to not update firmware then plug in the network cable and use any aftermarket cartridges you want take it from an HP printer tech this works

I've thrown out more ink jet printers than I care to remember because refill cartridges are soo expensive. I now use laser printers, far more affordable to run and reliable.

I done with HP printers. I ran out of black ink, and the software made me change both the black and color ink cartridges even though I never used the color cartridge.
