There are two general patterns of viral infections: acute and persistent. In this lecture we define and characterize an acute infection, the incubation period, asymptomatic infections, and why these types of infections are public health problems. Then we illustrate acute infections with five examples: influenza virus, poliovirus, measles virus, norovirus, and West Nile virus.
