I first heard this technique in "The Devil In I" by Slipknot, and as an amateur, I thought it was like breaking the fourth wall, and playing two melodies at once. I have continued with the idea that each string has its own voice

Higher notes starting on second string (b) fret 5 in reverse are major scale of major key E. And lower notes in reverse starting with 5th string (a) are minor scale of the same key e major/ c# minor. :)
