On the idea of D looking like a smile: I’ve always been torn and thought the D was either meant to resemble a smile OR a half sun/the straw hat itself since with its red band, it looks particularly evocative of a setting or rising sun over the horizon. Whether a smile or the straw hat/sun combo, it’s regardlessly fitting symbolism for this wonderful whacky pirate tale

I think the D in the name is actually a sake cup. We have seen sake in the series being used as a way to bond people together like family. This means everyone with a D in their name was a descendant of a member of this crew.

I also think the song Bink's Sake is actually a tale about the void century that is passed on through pirates. About the pirate Binks D (insert name) aka the original Joyboy who Faught to liberate the world, bringing people together under his banner to oppose the powers that tried to enslave the world.

Having people with that initial generally be important is one thing, having specific families take up specific roles over the centuries is another.
