This was one of the best tv series I’ve watched it years. The production values and presentation were top class. Wish we had more programmes like this from the BBC.

I missed the first 15 minutes or so but was absolutely captivated by this presentation and the scholar's who gave an ongoing dialogue! The similarities to the present day is striking and scary!

This was an excellent mini series. It wasn't so much about what Hitler did as a dictator, but more about how he manipulated the political system to break down democracy.

To all those saying how this is just another example of 'declining BBC history documentaries', please keep in mind that this miniseries is *not* meant to be 100% factual, nor intended for the expert in the field. It is part of what is known as the evermore-popular 'cinematic documentary (cinedoc)' style. It draws subject to the actual cinematography, storytelling, and spectacle of it being a work of media, sometimes foremost against just shoving facts down the audience. Personally critiquing the work of media, I thought that it was utterly stunning, with one of my few issues being the messy attempt at leitmotifs in the music. Yes, it was not perfect, and was not what some may be used to, but it was not intended to be. There is an extremely large bank of records and data to look at concerning the Rise of the Nazis you can refer to if you want factual analysis.
This cinedoc is an example of modern-day BBC history documentaries, not the old.

The documentary channel in Canada won't show episode 4 again. It was in the first broadcast, but in the subsequent broadcasts I tried to record all the episodes and they have never shown it again.
Episode 4 was about Germany attacking France, Norway etc. It generally showed the Nazi's succeeding, and Hitler's instincts paying off.
The series has been repeated about 6 times. Now who in this world would insist that we can't watch episode 4?
Why?

Is this sort of a docudrama version of “The Nazis: A Warning From History”(1997)?

That to me is the greatest documentary ever created about the rise of the nazi party.

I think the filmmakers had enough resources and funds to make a full-fledged feature length film, rather than a mini documentary series. Just the highlights would've been enough for side stories, while putting attention to the important details. And btw, the actor who played Hitler was a good look-alike, albeit and dare I say even a better look-alike than the previous well-known actor Bruno Ganz.

Probably the best made program I can remember. Still on iPlayer. Much better than the fantasy films you usually get.

So is this movie basically, "and then one day, for absolutely no reason at all, people voted Hitler into power."

This first episode was terribly done and lacked important context, so I turned it off. Also, the background music was too loud during the narrations. But the biggest issue was how it painted Germany in 1930 as some sort of stable or fledgling democracy with a capable chancellor, when in the fact the exact opposite is what drove millions to the extreme, violent alternative. It also glosses over the Communists' intent to divide Germany from within by force, and that the birth of the Brownshirts was a response to that. No mention of Versailles, no mention of the growing threat from Russia, no mention of massive unemployment and inflation. The seeds of fascism were sown well before Hitler, yet this trash wants you to believe everything was hunky-dory and it was Hitler who destabilized Germany (which he did, but over a decade after the early 1930s).

I watched six episodes but eventually got pretty tired of the format. The have a bunch of 2-bit Lithuanian actors play the part of major Nazi figures. No talking though so they just all seem like a bunch of robots. It wasn't bad a first but started to get a little tedious.

This a poor documentary, which just demonstrates the decline of serious history programmes coming out of the BBC. Two historians Richard Overy and Richard E. Evans, whom by their depth of knowledge on WW2 and the Third Reich add some intellectual ballast to the broadcast. But that's about it, no quality or depth at all.

Ironic how an honest to goodness war criminal was a talking head on this series.

And, "wouldn't that be the kicker if. . ." ""Turkey Tom" did hiring of industry jobs for GM and other manufacturers...[?]".

What a guy, Turkey Tom, and we still won't let your son have privacy, in "Lake Orion Charter Township", in "Lake Orion, Michigan", because, "Where's my money?", and "We'll throw you in the Military".
